Last month Tiesto played a massive gig at Disneyland in Paris to celebrate the launch of the new Spacen Mountain ride. I was lucky enought to go along, and to attend the pre gig press conference. Here``s what he had to say.

Welcome to the press concert for the Tiesto concert which will be happening later this evening. It is a unique concert from Tiesto here in the Disney park. The concert is a combination between the magical music of Tiesto and the magical setting of Disney. We’ve got some worldwide attention that’s why you’re all here. We have got 15 TV crews, 10 national radio stations, live radio, live radio broadcast and loads of attention. Its’s not only to promote the new Space Moutain attraction, but also to promote Tiesto’s new album, In Search of Sunrise 4. It’s an album which will be released early May, which contains smooth, emotional and melodic music which was influenced by Tiesto during his world tours throughout the world. He will be available for questions over the next half an hour.

Q: Do you believe in magic?
T: Yes I do. After I arrived here, yes.

Q: Question in Dutch

Cynthia is here to answer questions about the Disney perspective of this

C: When you look at Disneyland Resort Paris, the No.1 tourism destination in Europe, and in the music genre and look at who is No. 1 and its DJ Tiesto, the two of them had to come together at a certain time, and this was the time.

Q: Did the contact come from Disney?
C: It’s a combination. It’s lots of people working together all the time who know each other, who have brainwaves, brainstorms, and that’s how it came together.

Q: But um the initial idea came from Disney?
C: No it’s a combined combination. It’s two companies getting together.

Q: But the first idea came from?
C: The initial idea came from two creative people sitting together, people in tourism, people from Disney, what can we do, what hasn’t been done, what is a great opportunity? Who is no.1 in tourism and no.1 in music…

Q: Who would you like to send into space?
T: I think errr, all the terrorists in the world.

Q: And someone closer to you?
T: Someone I’d like to send to the moon? As a friend or more like a ….

Q: Whatever?
T: I don’t know, no I don’t know

Q: When you play these big gigs do you prepare differently to say a small club back in the UK or something? What’s the difference and do you have a preference?
T: Yes I also like the small intimate venues because things are more spontaneous, where with a big show you have to really prepare some stuff, so it is quite a challenge. They’re totally different things, but I like to do both, when I play the smaller clubs I learn more about the music, and shows like this I learn more about entertainment and about delivering an experience.

Q: Have you been busy preparing this show?
T: Not so much. Only had to do the musical bit for this. So I did the Space Moutain soundtrack, and my production team has done the show, so I only had to focus on the music, so I didn’t have to prepare much music.

Q: Will there be anything exclusive tonight?
T: Will of course play the biggest tunes, because people expect me to play those, But I’ll also play more new music. Going to be a big mixture between new music and what people know already.

Q: And the tracks are on the new album?
T: Well some of them, not all, but some.

Q: Have you been on the ride?
T: I haven’t been on it yet, I’ve been in the on the opening on the 6th, but I had a 39 C temp and didn’t feel well. I went on the old one, scary because it was dark.

Q: Is this the first time that Disney has worked with a dance DJ?
C: For Disneyland Paris it is.

Q: Do you think the image of Disney, does it combine perfectly with the image of Tiesto?
C: What we do is look at who comes to Disney, and yes we have a big percentage of families, but we also have a big percentage of young adults. And they fit together.

Q: Are you staying in the best room here? The Michael Jackson room?
T: Yes I’m in a big room, but not the Michael Jackson room, someone else more famous is in there.

Q: How is the room?
T: Well the room is very nice, I had a bottle of champagne waiting for me.
Q: Were you alone, or with company?
T: No I was with my girlfriend, my whole family are here

Q: What is your secret to success (with your productions)?
T: I started off being a DJ, so I know exactly how to move people on the dancefloor. And that’s what I’ve tried to do in my production as well. I don’t look at it as a radio production or a commercial thing, I just think if I put this in a record then people will scream on the dance floor.

Q: What are you planning for this year/next year in France.
T: This is my first time in France, so hopefully I’ll come back and do some more gigs, so hopefully after this show people will know me better and I’ll get more requests, because I never get requests to play in France. So far not yet. I’ve signed to a record label here now as well. So I feel like I’m here now and I’m making an advance here. Like five years ago, no one knew me in Holland, so…

Q: I notice on your new album it is a mixed compilation it is inspired by South America, so are they records from South America or are they inspired?
T: Well it is inspired, because when I played myself in South America I noticed that people reacted differently on different records. They don’t really like the realy hard records. They liked more melodic music, and that gave me that feeling I had five/six years ago when I made In Search of Sunrise. It definitely inspired me. Also the deeper stuff like when I go to Europe they like the hits and really go off on them, the rest they accept. Over there they accept every record.

Q: Have you done any special productions for the album, or is it a compilation?
T: Well it’s a compilation. I did a lot of editing on the tracks, because some tracks they have parts in there I didn’t like, and I cut some vocals. I worked with DJ Montana a lot on the editing. Also a couple of special edits. And also a secret track.

Q: Why is it special for you to do a show here in Disneyland?
T: Well its special for me, because first of all I’ve never played in France until this. And doing the Disney show because there is a lot of effort, really big stage, great production and great setting.

Q: Is the atmosphere of the whole place special.
T: For me personally I don’t even have time to walk around in the Disney park … a lot of people will be here for the whole weekend, so its like a package, they come here for Disney, and also Tiesto, its a whole experience.

Q: Is it true you don’t like to be called DJ Tiesto?
T: Well its true actually, because I’m not just a DJ, I also produce a lot of my own music and remixes. And when you say DJ Tiesto, a lot of people don’t really know about DJ Tiesto, they think oh he’s a DJ just mixing records. That’s why I said well lets just make it just Tiesto then.

Q: Are there plans to work with Disney in America as well?
T: No. Well, not yet.
C:You never know, lets have a great party first and see.

Q: Do the fan polls mean a lot? Like three years in a row, DJ mag No. 1 DJ, did that mean a lot to you?
T: Yes because a DJ doesn’t have much awards in general. DJ Magazine is the most important magazine, its for DJs by DJs, its like the Oscars for the DJ’s to win, so to be voted no. 1 three years in a row is great. It helped me a lot also, thanks to that I got remixes for Moby, Madonna etc those kind of people look at in magazines and go like who’s hot, if you’re hot, you get a lot of requests.

Q: Do you feel good that it was top three trance event – you, Paul and Armin, does that make you feel proud to be a trance dj?
T: Yeah, well I don’t think I’m just a, like in general I play a lot of trance tracks, but I provide for a wider audience, but without the trance I probably wouldn’t be No.1. People see me as a global DJ nowadays, I play a global sound.

Q: You’ve recently played a small part in a movie? Is that something you’d like to pursue more of?
T: Well I quite enjoyed it, because when you act you become someone else you are not.

Q: There are plans for you to play a world famous DJ who becomes deaf?
T: I’m one of his colleagues, but I only have one sentence on it! The DJ’s called Frankie Wild.

Q: What’s the name of that film?
T: Its All Gone Pete Tong

Q: It will be released on?
T: Next month I think

Q: So the Tiesto circus is getting bigger and bigger, do you still live a normal life or do you need bodyguards?
T: No I don’t need bodyguards, I’m not 50 cent. No I think I can live a normal life, because I am a famous DJ, but I’m not Madonna or something like that. If you act normal you are normal.

Q: Do you have still have time to do other things?
T: Ummm no. that’s the problem I’ve had over the past couple of months because I’ve felt like over the past 6/7 years my life has been all about music, by being a DJ, and there is more to life than that.

Q: Is there going to be a change, take time off?
A: Yeah I’m taking some time off this year. I want to get back to my roots where I come from as a dj, play some smaller clubs. This year I want to take it easy, enjoy life. I enjoy life a lot, but its nice to do some other things, see my family and friends more often, because everyone grows old and I don’t see them

Q: Are there any plans to come back here next year with little Tiesto’s?
A: No, no, no. Children take so much away of your life, they give so much back of course, but I want to live myself. Music has been my children for the past 10 years so…

Q: Do you have any remixers or production teams you’d like to work with over the next couple of years. Would you like to do more collaborations like you did when you started out.
T: At the moment I want to try everything. I’d like to do some new remixes, I’ve got some requests lying around the office and hopefully collaborate with some biggies which is always very difficult to get hold of. So yeah we’ll see.

Q: Are you planning on visiting Paris?
T: Well I’ve been to Paris quite a lot, well three times. For me, its four hours drive from my home, not this weekend though, I’m going home.

Q: The first song you’re playing tonight, do you think about that?
T: Well the first song I already know, because it’s the same into as the Tiest in Concert show in Holland, it’s the opening from my ‘Just Be’ album Forever Today, playing the classical piece as the opening, and after that I’ll take it in another direction perhaps. For a big show all of the lights and visuals, they’re all pre-programmed. The last track I don’t know, because sometimes you play for half an hour longer.

Q: How much is planned?
T: Well tonight not that much actually. Only the opening track is planned and I have DJ Mason coming over with his violin for a couple of tracks. And that’s the only plans. Because the crowd is very difficult tonight, age will be between 8 and 75. For a lot of people it’s the first time they hear me play. I’m always like to be a crowd DJ, I like to discover what they want, and give to them my own interpretation.

Q: Is it harder playing a big arena with lights and fireworks and the like?
T: Yes, because when you play in a club, clubbers they know all about music, and they’re so experienced that you can go deeper. And people tonight will only know me from ‘Love Comes Again’, and that’s the only track they know, so its more difficult to please everyone.

Q: What is your favourite Disney character?
T: Errrrr, well I guess Donald Duck. I think.

Q: Your next date in Belgium do you know when it will be?
T: We’re working on the 28th May, but there’s not a location yet, or a, well…so its not confirmed yet.

Q: Last year you were at Pinkpop It was amazing.
T: Yes that was amazing. I remember the floor, it fell down like 3 meters into the ground. Everyone was jumping so hard in front of the stage it fell down.

Q: Are you looking forward to Cream in Ibiza again?
T: Yes

Q: Will it be your third year or second?
T: Third. Yeah, I mean Amnesia is kind of comparable tonight, because people all other Europe go to Ibiza to party, and tonight we see the same, people come from all other Europe.

Q: French cheese or your cheese?
T: I like my own cheese

Q: What is your secret to success (with your productions)?
T: I don’t look at it as a radio production or a commercial thing, I just think if I put this in a record then people will scream on the dance floor.
