Work Inspections

Throughout the four Balearic Islands more than 6,000 inspections will be carried out during the course of the year in an attempt to eradicate the practice of illegal employment. At one time the emphasis was placed on the construction industry, but with the lack of funds to undertake public building and the decline in private construction, the inspectors will now be concentrating on the hotel and catering sectors. Both business owners and the unions are in agreement that it is not fair that some employers do not have all their staff insured and therefore have fewer overheads. Frequently the inspectors spot some of the staff disappearing through a back door when they enter, a sure sign everything is not as it should be. This applies particularly to night spots, and this year the inspectors will be accompanied by specially trained security officers in case they encounter any problems.
