First post, although i've been a lurker for many years..

Need your help guys. Is there anywhere on the island where you can hot desk from a laptop?

failing that any hotels or flats that have wireless internet?

Want to test the water to see if i can work/run my business whilst on the white isle this summer with a view to making ibiza my permanent base from last this year, early next.

your comments are much appreciated...

Well I'm almost doing what you seem to be planning. I work here in Ibiza although almost all my clients are in the UK. And I write a monthly column in The Guardian about it called: "A Desk in the Sun". Hopefully a book will follow if and when I find a publisher.

The reason I say "almost doing" is that I don't use wireless hotspots much to work from. The trouble is that all the ones I've found have music playing which can make it a bit hard to concentrate. :spank: The same goes for internet cafes.

But if you want to use a hotspot there are an increasing number on the island. I've used the one at Cafe Sidney in Marina Botafoch (as distinct from 'La Marina' which is the name for the old part of the port of Ibiza). I've also tried the hotspots at Sunset in Placa Parque and Aura on the St Joan road. There are others and it might be quite useful to start a list.

By the way, I have tried using Skype from Cafe Sydney. It works, so you can phone the UK for just over 1p a minute. The downside is that it means sitting in a bar looking as if you're a refugee from a call centre.

If anybody is thinking about moving over to work from here I'd be interested to hear from them on or off list. I don't mean working for a bar or whatever, but doing the same sort of thing here as they do or did in the UK. For instance, I know people who work as graphic designers and accountants entirely for British clients even though they hardly ever leave Ibiza.

I´m here now!

Am now over here and trying various hotspots

in san An there aree ´the phone booth´ internet cafes.

although they advertise wireless on their site. The wireless network doesn´t don´t work and for some of the shops there wasn´t one anyway.
They will let you plug in your laptop. But for me it didn´t work.´
The cost is €10 for 5 hours. €18 for 10. The big drawback is they don´t have skype on their PCs.

I´m currently in Ibiza town at locutorio and here its €7 for 5 hours and €10 for 10 hours. They do have skype. Although they have a wireless modem their isnt a wireless network.

I´ll make a list as i go along.

By the way i´m a consultant in web marketing (advise clients on how to gain traffic, convert more visitors to sales and make sure more customers keep on coming back.) I also do search optimisation (i get people to the first page of the search engines). I guess that means i should never have to leave ibiza if i moved here, but that would mean relinquishing my season ticket at Wrexham FC.

Hey Nick, do you think there's much call for Network Security Engineers in Ibiza? Could defiantly help Ibiza out with its Wireless Network/Internet infrastructure :)

Sounds like you're living the dream. Is it worth learning to speak some Spanish or Catalan before moving?

It’s something I’m beginning to think more seriously about every year, especially with the stupid house priced here in Blighty.

then just wait till you get here!

Since we started looking 3 years ago at apartment/villa prices in Ibiza - I am so 8O at how much they are asking today....... its as bad as the UK.

and people here earn a fraction of uk wages. the average young couple spend 62% of their monthly income just to pay the mortgage.

What are your actual utility bills per month (not looking for costs just who you have to pay each month)

electricity
gas
water
some form of council tax?
TV license
mortgage
contents/building insurance

are all these applicable to Ibiza, Spain

Aparthotel Garbi in Playa den Bossa also has free wireless Internet.

I suppose technically it might be for guests, but my friend who lived next door in Bali Beach would come over, sit at the bar and check his email - no problems.

yup. apart from tv license, but then many people have digital tv which is subscription. there is no natural gas here yet so all gas is bottled. in addition i have phone line rental, call charges, adsl, car insurance, road tax (payable to the council along with council tax) plus if you live in an apartment you'll have a community charge as well. i also pay a guy to maintain our pool because i'm clueless. it all adds up!

Is your council tax based on the value of your property as it is in the UK or does each town/village have its own rates?

Ours is ridiculously cheap at the moment because is based on the value of the house when we purchased it, however the house price has gone up 100k and I believe in the next year or so they will revalue the council tax which means that ours goes up by £1200 a year - which is just 8O

Holy Sh1t!!!! that is amazing!!!

I figure it would be cheaper for us come next year to sell up completely and move out to Ibiza - Phil works for himself now from home so it would only be a little matter of me getting a job (do you need a PA Stephen for Spotlight with a meagre grasp of the Spanish language     )

This thread seems to be splitting into two bits. On wireless hotspots I'd suggest keeping an eye open for cafes that advertise free WiFi. There's an ever increasing number because it only costs them a few euros and will pay for itself if they sell an extra couple of beers a day. I like Cafe Sidney mostly because it has a few power points as well which helps when your laptop's battery life can be measured in minutes. There's nothing more frustrating than when it decides to close down halfway through an email.

On utility bills it's very hard to make a comparison. Heating, for instance, is much cheaper because you don't need it for much of the year. My petrol bill's lower because it's a small island. My mortgage is bigger, but it's a lot cheaper because interest rates are lower. But my swimming pool costs cannot be compared with the UK. (Where to put a pool in an Edinburgh flat was always a problem.)

just thought I'd tie a few ends

fortunately, came back to britiain in july to say hello to my new little niece and fell ill very suddenly with an aneurysm causing a brain haemnorage and subsequent brain surgery soo after. Luckily now almost recovered.

However, it brought a few things home, I'd never thought about travel insurance being one, and the need for a spanish GP that is very fluent in english, etc.

if I'd stayed in Ibiza rather than going home, I dread to think of what the consequences would have been. It was hard enough getting the NHS to check me out, once they realised I didn't have menigitus (many symptoms are the same) - although what i had is more common.

so before anyone thinks about going over to work, sort out insurance and plan what to do if you fall ill. Then worry about finding a job and sorting out accomodation ---that's easy.
