Irrespective of what one thinks about the war, bringing the war into this situation is nothing but a very cheap political tactic. Yesterday, the Lt. Governor (John Garamendi) was bitching on the news channels about ending the war so that there are more National Guards in SoCal. While the situation is bad, it is not even near to a Katrina. Katrina was a water-locked situation with access possible by means of specialized transport mechanisms. Even if people wanted to help, they could not go into New Orleans. In SD, all roads are open. There were very few temporary closures. In Katrina the SuperDome in New Orleans was slammed with far more people than Qualcomm stadium. In addition, the prison population was allowed to mix with the public. That is not the case here. The SuperDome did not have electricity and water. At Qualcomm Stadium the evacuees are sipping lattes, getting massages, having yoga sessions, etc. Hurricane Katrina hit hard and all of that was at one time. People did not have time to evacuate. In the case of a spreading fire there is time to evacuate.
Most of the 1500 guardsmen are conducting patrols in some areas to prevent any looting. In all fairness, that would not even be necessary if SD County did not screw up their finances so badly that they are on the verge of bankruptcy. Disaster or no disaster, SD County is extremely short on police force; about 300+ officers short; or about 20% below normal levels.
Disagreeing with the war and the President is totally fine and dandy, not to mention the “in thing” right now. But trying to blow things out of proportion to further one’s agenda is pretty darn low.
The same goes for FEMA, Bush and Arnold beating their chest now and showing everyone how far they have come along, and how well everyone is working with everyone. It is the community coming together because they can come together.
