Why do DJ's 'hide'..........

...........went to Shidig at their new venue Digital in Newcastle last week. X-Press 2 were on. From the dancefloor all you could 'see' were 3 silouetted figures up onstage. They were pretty lifeless too, not getting down to the music. :?

I spent some time next to them at the side of the DJ stand to watch them working and noticed that there were no lights on the ceiling facing the stage. They were even using small torches to look at their CD/vinyl labels. Most other types of venue that have artists/live acts always have lights so that the audience can 'see' them. But, most big...ish clubs I've been to (with the exception of Space Terrace), the DJ is in almost total darkness. Is this meant to be cool or what?

As clubbers do you prefer this or would you rather 'see' who's entertaining you?

Right I'm off to the record shop, catch ya later.

I much prefer to dj in the dark - you can see the dancefloor better to guage reaction.

Apart from that though, it's also endemic of dance culture - it's about the music, not the individual. There's a good article in DJ Mag this month about why everyone slags off David Guetta is doing ads for Loreal, and it comes down to the same thing.

Having said that there's nothing better than seeing a DJ really getting off on the music he's playing -- it very much adds to the whole energy on the dancefloor (you know who I'm talking about Mark ;)). Compare with John 'The Statue' Digweed -- I mean I know the music should speak for itself but the guy could look like he was vaguely enjoying playing his set for the odd squillion!

having seen up close the likes of Brandon Block, Diggers (sorry John), jeremy healey, danny t...............I wouldve thought iot was pretty obvious! ;)

I particularly enjoy it when you can obviously see the DJ getting into it. Zabiela & Danny Howells are by far the most animated I've seen out of the bunch. I also think it's pretty cool when the DJ(s) show up early and just hang out w/ the "normal" folk. Showing up and making a grand entrance and exit is quite lame IMO. The best party I have ever been to had Sasha, Burridge, Cusick, Sander, & DJ Three all milling around the club just hanging out...dancing, groovin, chillin...basically partying like the rest of us. I think sometimes the DJs get away from what partying is like...yeah, they get to see it from the DJ booth but sometimes you just need to get on the floor and shake it.

I much rather see the Dj . . End of the day if Im gonna pay £10-20 to go see a specific dj .. I wanna see him as well as hear him . . I went to see Oasis & u2 the other day . . It's a bit like saying let them play in the dark and itl still be the same cos I can still hear them...

Ok, It's about the music for sure - but if there were two djs playing the same set and one was stood there in the dark and one was giving it loads up infront of the crowd . . I'd choose the latter every time.. Would bring me up more :)

Also agree with j_love . . They should mingle with the crowd as well . . Ok some of them are well known but hardly any are superstars . . big egos aren't a good thing !

... only interested in seeing them if I am perving.... :D other than that - its the music for me I am afraid.....

agree with zabelia & howells, hands everywhere, bet their missus' are happy!!!

I always remember seeing Morales at up yer ronson, he would just stand over the decks flexing his very buffed arms!!!!
