Sorry to be dull, but to get back to the topic.......
Disco Mafia? Oh please. I think some people have had a few too many disco biscuits and are experiencing a little paranoia.
Can anyone honestly say that its in the interests of the big clubs to shut down operations like Bora Bora, Sa Trincha or DC 10? Really?
Bora Bora and Space coexist very nicely. In fact I would say Space will probably be worse off without BB as it means PDB becomes no more than a rather dull family resort. Its own future then has to be in doubt as it will stick out as being the only place pumping out loud music which might frighten the poor mums and dads with their kids - "Come away from there little Jonny, that loud music might hurt your precious little ears"
DC 10. Exists on Mondays during the day. Cheaper to get in than almost everywhere else and usually host to people who have been at it in places like WLS since the day before. If it didnt exist - would as many people stay on at WLS til the bitter end? Has the existence of DC 10 harmed in any way the attendance of Manumission? I dont think so. It doesnt suck up much cash that could be spent in any of the other superclubs and doesnt steal their audience either.
Sa Trincha. Someone PLEASE explain this one. I cant find any logic in ANYONE wanting to "have it shut down". Manumission actually use it as a prime spot for drumming up business so why would they want it closed?
OK it is possible that the big club owners DO talk to each other and DO work together. They are in a unique position and it would be daft for them to operate in isolation as they would end up reducing each others takings. Why on earth do you think the weekly clubbing calendar is organised the way it is?
This does not mean that they are in the business of squeezing out anyone else who might dare to play music but more a business community who will be looking to develop the potential the island has for attracting clubbers not reduce it.
Disco Mafia. My arse!
I think its far more likely that its just a simple case of licensing laws being tightened up to try and "regulate" the island and give it a smarter image than just a hedonistic party capital populated by marauding drug crazed monkeys.
Spain is being dropped by holiday companies by the dozen as it is viewed as too expensive in comparison to places like Croatia. To attract them back, Ibiza has to prove it has all things under control and develop the island for a more mature and possibly upmarket audience who are less fussed about the cost.
The island government will therefore be looking to attract and develop upmarket businessess too which again will only come if they are sure that everything is done by the book and that the right audience exists for them to sell to.
Mark my words it is only a matter of time before the wasteland on the sunset strip is turned into high quality, high cost holiday apartments, PDB has a branch of Tiffany's, Es Cana has a spa resort and the hills become filled with championship golf courses.
This all started with the clamp down on the West end lager louts and the building of the promenade in San An (not bad things). The roads are already being upgraded, there is considerable development of very upmarket restuarants, the port is full of massive yachts. I anticipate that the airport will receive a new terminal soon and that more flights will be direct all year round. Hotels have been refitted and increased their star ratings each year, the beaches are much more well maintained than my first visit 8 years ago.
As I have said in an earlier post I think that unless these places can sort out their licence problems over the winter there will be more bars following them. Obvious targets for this treatment in my opinion would be:
Kanya - v. loud during the day and borders potential development land.
Mambo/Cafe DM/Savannah - As above.
BarM/Itaca/Orange Corner - Nice looking bars but posh people might not want house music on the beach. Might do well to develop their menu rather than their DJ booth.
Space - Will become all indoor inside 3 years.
DC10 - Will be access road for new airport terminal.
Priviledge - Converted into Apartments and all inclusive resport with Golf course & spa
Amnesia - levelled and land turned into an exclusive development of 3-5 bedroomed villas starting @ £800K
Es Paradis - Turned into an Ibiza heritage museum
Eden - Never spoken of again.
Nightmare? Fantasy? Wait 10 years and find out.
