Where to stay in Ibiza? Please need help!

We are currently planning our Ibiza holiday but with so many different areas in the island, we are not sure where to head to … we’ll be traveling with a 2-year old toddler so will need children friendly beaches (i.e. sandy and shallow waters). We don’t want somewhere too quiet, although if it has good links (i.e.ferry) to Ibiza town for example we could live with that. Last year (our first time in the island) we stayed in the Old Town in Ibiza and although we loved it, it was a nightmare going up and down with the pushchair everywhere!!!

We may be getting a car so wouldn’t mind to drive 5 mins. to the beach, although would prefer not to.

Also, and most important, we wouldn’t want to stay in a too ‘Spanish’ part of the island. I’ll explain why … we have been to many beaches in mainland Spain, and as a mixed couple, we get stared at quite a lot …. That’s exactly why we loved the vibe in Ibiza town; no one stared, very eclectic, everyone just does their own thing. Ibiza town is perfect in that respect, just not practical with a toddler in tow!!!! We originally thought Santa Eulalia but just read a post saying that it’s got a local Spanish atmosphere …. So still confused!!!

Anyone can help??????

Thanks a lot in advance

hola!

I can't really help cos I'm not an expert on places to stay but one thing is sure, Ibiza is a very cosmopolitan place and not only Ibiza Town, so don't worry for that.

BTW, what other beaches in Spain have you visited?

Sil

we went to several Costa del Sol beaches, such as Torrox, Mijas, Torre del Mar ... and we ended up coming back home early because we couldnt leave the apartment without everybody staring non-stop!!! Sad but true, specially being Spanish (from Madrid, living in London now for 6 years), as i never though people in my own country was like that ......

just to clarify, people did not stare with bad intention, but only out of curiosity (which didnt make it less confortable anyway)

I know it's sad and it's not an excuse but in this country we haven't had same flow of immigrants and so in some places there's no multicultural experience. I consider myself a modern girl and it's always a shock the London or Paris tube.

Flor, are you spanish? join the spanish forum then ;)

Silvia - I found this forum more informative about Ibiza, that's why I posted here, but once I have sorted the accommodation I will for sure drop by in the Spanish forum!!!!! :D

Hi Flor

We spent a lot of time on Talamanca beach in the summer. It has very shallow water and there were lots of families there. It seemed to have a very eclectic mix of nationalities - german/italian/french/english. There are quite a few hotels around that area, and some excellent restaurants along the beach. It is very easy to get into Ibiza Town from there- 5-10 minutes in a car, or you can get a boat across the harbour.

thanks Scoobie

Talamanca is definitely an option. The only con with Talamanca is that part of the charm of spending time in Ibiza is being able to enjoy those amazing 'calas' and semi-secluded beaches; Talamanca for what I've heard is quite a long and big beach ... a bit worried it will be like being on any other beach in i.e. Costa del Sol.... (not sure I explained myself clearly... ;)

Will look into Talamanca more in depth ... any apartments recommended?? (more convenient than hotel with a toddler in tow!!!)

Thanks again

Flor, I think that most big areas (Platja d'En Bossa, st Antoni, Talamanca) have big beaches costa del sol lookalike.
I would suggest you to rent a car for a day or two and head up to the north for lovely days in the beach

Around San An Bay has some small beaches that aren't too busy in June/Sept, very child-friendly area round there too and some decent cheap hotels and apartments. It's also handy for buses if you don't want to drive.

I found some very nice apartments in Cala Varida ... is that a nice area? Isn't it too close so San Antonio?

I also loved the pictures in another post of Cala San Vicente ... looks like paradise!!!! It says online that it has sandy beach and shallow waters, but not sure whether it's a bit out of the way ......

Any comments??

Thanks everyone!!

Cala tarida is about 20 mins drive from san an, there are also buses and ferries to get there. it's a very poular resort with italians and the beach is extremely busy in high season. it's a gently sloping beach and good for kids

san vicente is a nice beach but i don't think it's suitable for toddlers as the beach has a sudden 'ledge' or steep drop just as you enter the sea. it is of course quite isolated too.

Thanks Steven, really useful info!! May I use your knowledge a bit more??!! ;)

Other beaches I have read are good for toddlers are:
Es Figueral
Cala Lleña
Niu Blau and
Cala Llonga

We have decided that we don’t mind to hire a car and drive maybe 5-10 mins. to a nice beach; we’d prefer a smaller, more ‘cosy’ beach than big one … are these any good?

Thanks!
Flor

i think they probably are good for kids though i've never been on any of them in summer so i don't really know personally how crowded or not they are. however if you're over that side of the island other little cosy coves are cala boix and cala mastella which are a drive from the resorts and don't get too crowded - the only problem is limited parking so get there early.

sorry I called Steven!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks, will have a look in the forum archives at accommodation around that part of the island....

Thanks!!

My site nothing like the quality of this one but you might find the pics of Cala Martina and S'Argamassa to your liking as quiet sandy beaches with shallow water and half way between Es Cana and Santa Eulalia and has pics of hotels and info on the resorts. By car you are about 25 minutes from Ibiza and 20 from the northern beaches - enjoy.

Thanks again

First, can i just say that i am proud to be Spanish; i defend my country always I can and I am proud to say I am Spanish to everyone.

On the other hand, you may not like to hear this, but some people in Spain needs to get out more and see the world. I am not saying this applies to everyone in Spain, but many, many parts of the country are not used to see people from other races and as a consecuence they stare and whisper about it (gossip after all in the national sport in Spain!!!!!!)

And can I just say, I know what I'm talking about ... unfortunately it's been 4 times already that we have booked a stay of two weeks in a Spanish beach (mainland Spain) and had to cut our holidays short because of people staring non-stop wherever we went, day and night, beach and restaurants ... and we were't even holding hands or anything, just walking quietly talking in the promenade beach.

The only two exceptions we found in Spanish beaches (and I tell you, I've been in a lot of them) where no one would stare non-stop at us was Puerto Banus (too flashy for us!!!) and Ibiza, which we loved because of its diversity and eclectic atmosphere.

I am not calling Spanish people racist but you have to admit that Spanish people like to stare and judge people for the appearances, and even if they stare out of curiosity only, still makes it uncomfortable if you are at the receiving end. They may not have a problem with it (as you said) but try to walk anywhere with 20 people staring at you from all direcctions around you, constantly.

Also, I am not avoiding beaches with Spanish people; I was just asking for places with diversity and people from different nationalities and ethnics, which you will agree plays a big part in the charm that the island has and makes it so special.

Hope this is clear now.

Now, anyone has more info on Cala Vadella??? ;)

Cala Vadella is a beautiful spot but I don't recall any hotels and one of my favourite restaurants right on the beach has now closed. July and August can be like a furnace there but the water is clear and calm although that was my worst meeting place with swarms of jellyfish !
It is quite quiet with little to do in the evenings and is a bit of a trial getting back to the main Ibiza road but at least it it is no longer a dirt track as in the fun days.
Seem to remember more Italian/Spanish there whereas the Es Cana area is definitely British.
