Whats the deal with the Hippy markets?

Hola everyone!

I'm not an Ibiza rookie on the club side but if we're talking about all the other stuff you can do I need advice. Especially concerning the Hippy Markets. ;)

Tried to google some but it says different things and ppl I've talked to say other things. So I'd be very happy if someone would clarify WHEN and WHERE they are and if there is a difference between em (if there is more than one). Opening hours would be great too!

Thanx in advance!

Poor Stephen... I'm not sure what more you could do aside from adding neon colors to the links to the main site, conveniently located on the right side of this page!

We ventured to the Hippy Market last year to see what all the fuss was about. We won't be going back and we won't be recommending that the 2 friends coming with us this year pay a visit either. You could hardly move and even though we had a quiet night the night before it was all too much for me. I can't remember how much it cost us but I couldn't get out of there quick enough. However, this is only my personal opinion so I'm sure you can make up your own mind.

Which one did you go to, Nails?

Las Dalias (San Carlos, Saturdays) tends to be a bit crowded but is better for shopping.

Es Cana (Wednesdays) is bigger and more spread out, so more space to move around and less crowding. Nevertheless, I thought it felt a bit too commercial to be called a Hippy Market.

Both of them are more hype than reality in terms of finding interesting things at decent prices. Still, you might stumble across a hidden gem or too. The missus found a very nice handmade silver and opal-like stone pendant on our recent visit to Las Dalias for around 25 euros, and she picked up a couple of shirts for her brothers. Most of the stuff you'll see elsewhere but some things are quite unique (I specifically remember one stand with really interesting t-shirt designs that I hadn't seen anywhere... I think they're by a local designer. Still kicking myself for not getting one)

I went to the Es Cana one on Wednesday John. Really wasn't my thing and as you say it's a bit commercialised too. Got harassed a couple of times by fellas giving you scratchcards that lead to you buying a dodgy timeshare or something.:x

We went to the one at Es Cana as Sarah was insisting on going and it did my head in abit but mainly due to not being used to the heat and people just standing in the way looking blankly ahead of them I swear it was very similar to Shaun of the Dead! "hippy" market I'd question too! That said we did make a few purchases so Sarah was happy!

Ya, I thought the Es Cana one was poor in comparison to Las Dalias.

I'm surprised that you'd say it's overcrowded though (but I could just be comparing it to the more crowded Las Dalias in my head )

Not that Las Dalias is some great shopping mecca or anything but it feels somewhat less commercial.

If you want something a little different, make your way up to San Miguel on Thursday evenings. They've got a fair of locally-made goods. Not much to choose from but you can grab a trinket or two and support local producers 8)
(I skipped the jewelry and got some goat cheese, which was a delicious and integral part of my dinner last Friday :D)
