what makes a dj great?

someone that can create an atmosphere just out of playing records. Someone that interacts with the crowd. Someone that builds up their set nicely then drops a huge tune, making the crowd go nuts.

Someone that reacts to crowd's wishes, i.e. a dj dropping an ultimate classic on the space terrace :P

Imo a 'great' DJ is one where you never know what is coming next, the likes of Louie, Krivit, Tenaglia etc.

That's why the likes of Hed Kandi (soory all you HK lovers ;) ) bore me senseless, it's just the latest 'anthems' plus a few 'classics' thrown in for good measure but the likes of Promised Land etc are predictable 'classics', I want them to dig something out their box that I've not heard for years or maybe never heard before.

The best sets are ones that I don't know 80% of what is being played but I leave afterward and haven't stopped dancing for 8 hours :D

IMO there is thousands of average dj's but only a select few that really blow you away.

I love it when a dj drops a record you have never heard, or a rock record (could be any genre) just something completly different and you and all your mates turn round and look at each smiling and going WFT :D and then continue dancing. Building and building without been obvious makes a great dj

Great dj's can play for hours and hours and always take the crowd with them without anyone ever getting bored. Switching aimlessly from many styles is also a must.

Roger Sanchez, Tenaglia (I saw him @ space miami 2 years ago and he had the crowd locked into a groove until well gone 5pm the next day 8O ), MAW, Garnier, Derrick Carter all spring to mind........

Nice post btw :D

IMO tunes selection & Transition between every tune ..

.
.

but at then end, if ur dancing THEN the DJ is good ;)

Anybody can put a record on. It's all about personality and sense of humour and I should know!!

what seperates the GREAT djs from all the others?

Usually a nice cravat to go with the Dinner Jacket does the job

'taxi' :P [/b]

suprise, charisma on the decks, and being able to weave loadsa tracks into one beautiful set...

itsb easy to mix records... fugging hard to build a decent set....

Luck.

Being in the right place at the right time.

Not always applicable, and there are greater factors, but I'd thought I'd mention it.

dj gee is not technically the best, but plays decent music and covers the whole house music spectrum. added to the fact he can get a party started & keep it going & building for 8+ hours makes him a great dj. a lot of peops take him for granted and feel he has been blessed with the perfect venue/setting, but many guest djs have tried and failed to rock the best beach bar in the world...

A DJ that looks like there having fun, wants to be there, takes time to talk to the crowd and say hello.

A DJ that plays to the crowd and has a laff definatley makes a good DJ in my eyes.

That can make a successful DJ Daniel-sun, but not necessarily a great one. In fact some DJs are successful by luck, charm and networking skills alone, despite having no discernable talent. Still not great though.

Yes Master Buckley, that is oh so true! That was probably my point I was trying to make.

And we both know a few people who this especially applies to!

Can you all elaborate on what you mean by 'building a set' , or 'working the crowd' - it seems that a lot of people use these phrases but not many can quantify it.

I've always thought that the best dj's do what they're paid to do, entertain the crowd, and they are prepared to play anything to do it.

I've known a few. and the best ones will always play and test the crowd until they get that moment when the floor is full and then they can start the journey.

To me it was always about seeing what you could get away with, keep the floor full with people dancing to music they may never have heard before but just going along with it because they were enjoying themselves.

When they start believing their own press and start getting up their own arse is when they start to lose it, the 'you must enjoy my set because of who I am syndrome'

feeding the croud from the palm of his hands with a superb tune selection that can fit any given moment.

somebody who can judge the crowd....a good dj is someone who looks interested when there playin.....nothing worse than a motionless dj......someone who plays a lil different......
