does 'funky house' REALLY mean?

I haven't played alot before & I'm playing a little warm up set tonight and the guy who runs the show wants me to 'keep it funky'

Does he mean 'don't cane it before the others [I included] come on'

Or does he mean keep it disco cheesy for fun and not include anything too deep (which I actually really love) cos it'll be funky all night long...?

What does anyone reckon? :?

if yr warming up, start of soulful, chilled out kinda vibe, and build it up nice nslow but not too much, and take it from there!

depends what type of night it is. If it's a house night, play it safe with no obviously big records. Don't try and be too underground either, as it's your job to get people on the floor as early as possible - and don't forget that it's your job to warm up for others, they get the unenviable task of playing all the big tracks and stealing the show.
Don't take it too seriously, enjoy, and that will shine through far more than the genre of music you're playing.
Keep the bpm's low and don't play anything too crazy, although you could maybe afford to drop the odd classic near the end of your set, just to give people a taster of what's to come.

Oh, and don't get too p*ssed before playing !!!
:P

thank you guys!

Kind of what I thought, it's advertised as a sexy funky house night but when I've been there before it gets a bit harder around 11, so it's a bit confusing really. But you're right, I should just chill out about it and focus on some of my mates with a big smile :D or several :D :D :D

A few drinkies should help, at least playing at 9 means big things aren't expected of me and I can just mosey along behind the decks, have a chat, etc etc...

still f****** nervous though

Thanks guys.

Raking through my collection now.

Thankfully I don't have any real cheese so I'll have to just deal with it! what's the worst that can happen? That they never ask me to play again...oh well...I aim to have fun anyway...

Wow! What a pleasant surprise! Started playing funky, kept it down a bit with some basically deeper soulful house then a couple of favourites then the last half hour played a few slighter more, kind of thumping tunes...

All my mates were there and they actually made it for me, keeping up my mood, even when I did a couple of f*** ups .. Probably cos I broke the Stu rule and had a mohito and two long vodkas before I started..I got to a point where I was really enjoying the tunes and not paying attention to the fact I was going to have to mix soon...oops

But brilliant fun, cos then we had some live PA guy who was really good! He gave an underground feel to the night which I haven't experienced for a while.

But thanks for your advice too guys! 8) Also had Marky(sun) there giving me on the spot handy hints! Twas like having my own yoda :D
