What DJ's have better live sets than CD's or vice versa?

That is so annoying! I always go to the music shop hoping to recapture (somewhat) the feeling of a DJ's killer set at the club, only to be disappointed when buying one of their CD's!!! Please help me out here. I wonder if I have just had bad luck? A couple opinions of mine, and please add your own:

AMAZING live sets, rank CD's:
*Tall Paul (with the exception of his half of Ministry of Sound Ibiza Annual 2000)
*Steve Lawler. I know I am going to be shredded for that, but sorry, same BORING jungle beat over and over
*Dave Seaman! Someone please help me here with a reccomendation! I have heard GU from Cape Town is great, haven't heard it yet. I love Dave.

AMAZING CD's, not too impressive live
*TIESTO. Seen him a bazillion times, only twice was off the chain.
*Oakenfold. Seen him six times, only once blew my mind. I have almost every CD of his though and love every minute

AMAZING CD'S, AMAZING LIVE PERFORMANCES... you can't go wrong.
*Sander Kleinenberg.
*Paul Van Dyk.
*Armin van Buuren. Yay, he will be here in a few weeks.
*Erick Morillo.

On a sidenote, I saw Mark Farina for the second time last weekend. The first time blew, last weekend was OFF THE RICHTER... I could barely walk the next day. Phenomenal. GO!!!

Well I think you're.. spot on!

I would like to add that Carl Cox is not really what I pop in my cd player.. but come back live! 8O 8O 8O 8) 8)

Hell yeah, Carl Cox is SICK live... but the CD's are BLECCH. Plus his energetic performances and huge smile add a lot to the live sets too. But dare I say, the CD's I have heard by him sound super noisy.

check out the renaissance - mix collection #4 (dave seaman & ian ossia)
BOTH these CD's are funky AMAZING....
they are quite (very?) old but still

also check out:
renaissance - london
renaissance - awakenings
gu - cape town

paul oakenfold:
gu - new york city CD 4 me 8)

Morillo - his own productions are great, his mix CDs are great, but very disappointing live - can't fault the tunes, but poorly mixed and SUCH a poser.

Jules - CDs are OK, although the tunes tend to be a bit too obvious, radio show is usually excellent but utter pish on most occasions I have seen him live.

Lawler - have to agree about the mix CDs, a bit uninspiring, but some of his productions are nasty, nasty, nasty and those live sets... wow!

discoplayer: Have seen that Renaissance mix in the stores, and almost bought it... for sure next time. Thank you! MAN, Renaissance puts out some sick discs! 8) Also the Oakie GU NYC... a beauty. "When angels... look down from above... What do they see? Do they see the same as me?"

MarkSimpson: All I have to say is that Morillo blew my mind in September 2002 at Pacha. I was so tired from the previous four days of the trip that my legs were actually SHAKING in my heels as I was walking to the door. I ended up dancing hardcore till 8AM (my first time going to a club and walking out to see mobs of peeps and broad daylight.) The set was so sexy and intoxicating, I jumped up on the bar next to the DJ booth to get to him, and he signed my CD and gave me a kiss on the cheek... It was melting. I have been disappointed though as of recently... especially when I heard he was collaborating with >dun dun DUN...< P. DIDDY!!! Barf.

ps. Also Mark: agree with you about Jules... not the best, not the worst as far as CD's and sets. Can you recommend a great CD by him?

also all the "mushroom jazz" comps by farina are choice!!! ;)

He plays mostly trance with a bit of psy-trance thrown in!
My personal favourite of his albums is 'For Your Ears Only', but I've yet to get any of his stuff on the Spun label. He also played Global Most Wanted at Privelege last year. :D
You can listen to some snippets of his stuff on his website:

Have fun!!!
