Walls in Ibiza!!!

Just around the corner from our house is this amazing craftmanship being carried out. Two guys with huge wide brimmed straw hats working away in the sun. I love seeing old walls being repaired and new ones being built in this style. I would be interested how much per metre this work costs, I know back in the UK traditional dry stone walling is not cheap. This example here does actually have a concrete filling, I guess deviating slightly from the traditional style for longevity. Many years ago as a child I used to help my dad when he was dry stone walling in Yorkshire. My job was to find fillings for the cavity, no concrete used!

The bottom image shows the extent of the full wall will eventually cover.

Bueatiful! Thanks for posting. Some serious graft going on there.

I often secretly admire the various stonework structures I see in Ibiza (sure there’s some in Amnesia lol)

I love a bit of craftsmanship like this. A real hard learned skill, passed on over the centuries.

I take it your old man is a Dalesman? Famed for their dry stone walls.

My Grandfather was a young boy during WW2. He was moved out of Newcastle and spent his time in rural Cumbria living on a farm. His main job was working as a shepherd but also included building dry stone walls. Later returning to Newcastle and working in various coal mines. He had a passion for dry stone walls.

I follow an interesting (interesting if you are as dull as me) page on FB called Inimitez. It showcases a lot of stonework similar to your pics above. I think the tradition on the European main land around the Mediterranean is to use mortar or concrete in the core. Some even have visible mortar joints. The way they set up the string lines and profile boards to plumb the corners and headers is impressive.

As an aside, my old man works in building renovations. He has found it quite hard over the past few years to find available stonemasons. It’s becoming a bit of a pinch point trade from what I hear. The good ones that are out there are very busy. I imagine they will charge quite a high day rate for their work. My Dad has picked up enough of the basic skills to get him through the jobs he does. Recently handcutting sandstone quions, which took him forever and a day lol.

Good honest work 👍

That's a good story amigo, hard to beat a bit of good honest toil.

As AI takes over many roles, skilled craftspeople of any kind will be safe for a while longer!

Always interested to see how things are built/made. Was observing a lot of building work in Majorca this week and many of this style of wall were being constructed but with concrete slabs internally rather than individual stone. I’d say that’s got to be such a satisfying job but maybe not so much in the blistering heat 🥵

Yeah it’s interesting how AI is muscling into most things now. I’m not sure if I like it to be honest.

I bought myself a newer car last month. Saw it for sale on the Autotrader website. A little local garage dealer. The description they had wrote of the car was absolutely bloody brilliant. Really well written I thought. Witty and a bit comical.

Anyway, after we had bartered out the deal of the century I asked the salesman who had written the great description of the car. Imagining some kind of Swiss Tony type character had penned it in.

I was a bit gutted when he said he just puts it into an AI app that writes car descriptions up in a Jeremy Clarkson style

Bloody AI.

Working in the heat is always easier if you have some ice cold tins of booze waiting for you as a reward.

The trick is not to crack them open too soon 🥴😂
