Very Insular People

Firstly as a newbie to the forum my apologies as I'm making an educated guess that this subject has been done to death numerous times.

I wondered what people think of VIP Ibiza - good or bad (think I know this one!), why it has emerged, whether it will be fleeting or slowly change at least parts of the scene for good?

To me it is anathema to what Ibiza should be about but my finger isn't on the pulse not having been for a few years I wondered what others are seeing?

'VIP' as such isn't new to the island at all. pacha has had a tables section for ages and even KU back then had a 'prive' section where drinks already used to be more expensive than at the main bars.

what's the main issue (I think) is that nowadays everyone makes such a big thing about it. I basically don't have a problem with a vip/tables section at all. for those who want it - why not? all the right people know the main party happens on the dancefloor and not in the vip anyway. but if you have the money and want to have a place to re-group, be able to sit for a while, have a drink and chat, again, why not? i don't think there's anything bad about the basic fact of having a table. the main problem is much more the VIP CULTURE. to think you're only cool if you get a table or at least have that damn vip wristband, that's what's so wrong IMO.

of course a lot of ibiza veterans do know that this is the contrary of what ibiza is about. i would say that one of the essential 'rules' on the island was/is that everyone is equal - but the vip CULTURE (not the fact you're being able to have a table) is contradicting it. and first-timers who come to the island and see all of this might be blinded and think 'oh yeah, i need to do this to be cool'.

don't know if I'm making sense here, but that's how I see it.

Thanks both. Yeah maybe the good thing about a Ibiza is not that it has no VIP but that it is almost universally seen as an uncool.

I think you're spot-on Stivi. I've defended "tables" in the past. I.e. Some nights you just want to have a drink and chat etc. But you've hit it on the head with the VIP Culture thing! But I'm sensing there may be a slight back-lash soon when these people realise that it's actually insanely un-cool. It's the complete opposite of cool. You're basically buying a place in a party because you can't help create the vibe on the dancefloor!

Ushuaia have pushed them to the back this year, and I think it works a treat! Much bigger dancefloor. And Pacha I think has more room than ever for non VIP culture.

Does nothing for the atmosphere and nowadays full of the faux rich essex mob. Back in the day it was ok mixing with all these rich old guys who had just come off theirs boats, but everyone likes to think they are a VIP these days.

And for that reason it is a big no from me.

as Stivi said theres always been VIP and always been celebrities on Ibiza, but they used to adapt into the ways and culture of the island, now it seems the opposite, a lot of venues are adapting to VIP culture and celebrity culture. If that makes sense? !

I don't think you had to pay for vip treatment in the 90' s in pacha ect. We played pool one night with 2guys in a bar and later that night in pacha we got asked to join their party in the vip with a bevy of pacha dancers ect.vip then was tiny space looking onto the old dance floor. We stuck out like Kevin&Perry so we did`nt stay long...

spot on

The VIP culture is a cancer which will spread to every corner of the island unless someone with influence has the cojones to stand up and says this is all UTTER BULL$HIT. But who's going to be the chump that does that when millions are at stake? I went to a smallish festival at the weekend in Dorset. About 400 people. People there to hear good music, no egos in sight. I knew all the DJs and the ones who weren't playing were otherwise dancing or getting refreshed with the rest of us on haystacks or in the woods. No vip, no nonsense, just smiles - or is all that all too dangerously hippy these days?

It shouldnt be called vip full stop. Its table service at best. Just because one person decides they want a table/base for the ngt doesnt make them any more important than joe raver getting sweaty on the dance floor. Its how people want to spend there ngt and thats all it is. Me personally im getting on the dance floor and only stopping for a quick fag outside. On the other hand ive got mates who love the music but for whatever reason they dont/wont dance. In there case a table is perfect as they get to listen to and enjoy the same music in comfort with a few drinks. The problem is when a club stops recognising the dancefloor ravers in favour of tables. Vegas is a prime example went there a few years back and if you didnt have a table you couldnt get in a club simple as that. I have no problem being in a club with a mixture of the two as long as one doesnt overpower the other. The demand for tables in vegas has led to what I described earlier. At the minute that demand has not hit ibiza and I dont think it will for a long time if at all in the big clubs anyway

Vegas has changed a lot. you can get GA presales online to any club/party.... granted much of the best real estate is taken up by tables but the vast majority of people that go to Vegas clubs now do not get tables. especially as they are $$$.

I've gotten a table on occasion... its nice to have a place to sit and have drinks made for you.... i've clubbed a long time... my tired feet like to sit sometimes :)
