USB External Drive MP3 Mixers

Hi

Does anyone have any experience of...

Cortex HDC-1000
Numark D2 Director
Denon DN-HD2500

I'm looking to move to mixing mp3's from an external hard drive so all comments and suggestions on other possibilities welcome.

I tried the Numark and found the jog wheel very flimsy and unresponsive. Also there was no pitch bend which personally I like to use when mixing cd's. Shame really because the rest of the unit was very impressive.

Good post, this should get stickied. I haven´t used my vinyl for over a year and copied most (but not all yet) to MP3 and would like to know what would be the best products to use.

not used any tbh, what about the m-audio torq xponent, looks nice

the idj2 looks alright, but im sceptical of it being a bit gimmicky. dont confuse it with the original COMPLETELY USELESS idj which didnt have pitch control or anything and required 2 ipods to work. you can also have 2 line and 2 phone inputs hooked up to switch between s well. however, it could be a TOY. probably best getting your hands on one and having a shot. let me know if you do.

you dont even need an ipod for this, a usb hard drive will do. theres some good videos on youtube of it

also spotted this in one of the comments with regards to the pitch control...

Much thanks for the answers. I guess Numark doesn't think it's important to have finer pitch control, maybe this unit is geared towards pushbutton DJs after all. Such a shame, now I'm going to have to wait for the Cortex DMix 600 to come out to see what it has to offer.

You should remember - pitch control is changable via a firmware update.... Cortex will still be Gemini - long after you open

The other thing to remember is that all of us DJs in the 90's used CD players with 0.1% pitch increments.... It certainly ain't locked and perfect, but is very easily manageable by a half good ear.

I wasn't expecting this, but a Numark engineer replied to me and here's what he said:
"The pitch slider resolution is 12-bit filtered to 9-bit giving 512 repeatable steps across the slider. On 6% range this equates to 0.024% resolution which I guarantee is more accuracy than a human could use on a 70mm slider. On 12% range you get better than 0.05%."

I literally want to plug a USB stick or external drive into this unit which is connected to my mixer and go. No laptop at the gig.

Will then have my 4 channel Vestax Mixer with the Technics 1200s on phono channels and the new unit on line in chanels.

The Numark D2 was impressive but let down by poor control of pitch through the jog wheel. Searching was very easy and it loaded the track quickly.

I actually used my Nokia N95 8GB with music collection via USB cable and it was SOOOO easy. Shame about the controls though.

Most of these units have update-able software free from their respective websites too which is encouraging.

Seen the Cortex for £200 from USA which is very cheap but not had a play with it.........yet.
