Four Manchester United FC players are included on the seven-man list of nominees for the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year award, with Cristiano Ronaldo expected to battle it out with Chelsea FC forward Didier Drogba for the coveted title.
First African?
Portuguese winger Ronaldo, 22, has scored 16 goals in 29 Premiership games, a mark only eclipsed by Drogba who has 18 goals from his 32 league outings this season. The Ivory Coast striker would be the first African to land the award, established in 1974, if successful in London on Sunday night. United midfielders Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs are also in contention along with last season's winner Steven Gerrard of Liverpool FC, while Ronaldo, team-mate Wayne Rooney and Arsenal FC playmaker Cesc Fabregas are nominated for both the main award and the Young Player version, where they face competition from Kevin Doyle (Reading FC), Aaron Lennon (Tottenham Hotspur FC) and Micah Richards (Manchester City FC).

it is ridiculous that the voting for this has already taken place.

yeah sure the front runners are not going to change but what if drogba scores a hatful from now to the end of the season or a hat trick against united and the winner in the cup final.

totally stupid that the most crucial part of the season is not even taken into consideration. that is when the real top class players will be in their element and the also rans found out.

Yeah you do have a point there grego although in fairness Ronaldo has been head and shoulders above anyone else in the Premiership this season and i cant see that changing.

agreed but that's not the point. the final last 6-8 weeks or so of the season as is by far the most important...........i.e. when titles, cups, leagues are decided and won.

i would argue that if drogba almost single handedly guided chelsea to at least the league and FA cup then this would overshadow what ronaldo has done because then he would have been a great player in a side that won nothing.

player of the year should always be about achieving success and it is still all to be decided at the moment.

Drogba will win it. And justifiably so.

I'm almost glad there are 3 Man U players up for the award. Hopefully it split the vote.

It is an absolute travesty that Michael Essien is not on that list.

for what?? saving chelsea's skin this season, because without him they certainly wouldn't be where they are now.......agreed he's scored alot of goals and some great ones at that, but lets not forget he is a striker, thats what they do ;) .

Ronaldo on the other hand is a winger, 20+ goals in a season is fairly rare for that position, coupled with fact he's come on so much this season from the summer (albeit he did bring it on himself  ) and his all round team performace for united has been second to none, I think he will probably edge it (and rightly so) over drogba.

I admit I am a united fan so you may think I'm a little bias but even if I wasn't I would still be in awe of a great great talent to hit these shores, being compared with Georgie Best doesn't happen that often and even John Terry admits today that he thinks he is the best player in the world at the moment 8O  !

Id lay hard currency that he wont and Ronaldo justifiably will win it, ive not seen a player of such immense talent in recent years as Ronaldo, it would be a travesty if he didn't win it.

seems even you're own players think differently Morbyd ;)

Terry tips Ronaldo to beat Drogba to gong

Chelsea captain has described Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been nominated by his fellow professionals for both the Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards, as `the best in the world'.

Ronaldo and United team-mates Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes, as well as Didier Drogba (Chelsea), Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal) and Steven Gerrard (Liverpool) are the nominations for the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year award. United's Wayne Rooney and Ronaldo, Fabregas, Kevin Doyle (Reading), Aaron Lennon (Tottenham) and Micah Richards (Manchester City) are the nominees for the PFA Young Player of the Year award. But Terry believes Ronaldo is the man to beat for both awards. Terry added: 'I totally admire the player after the stick he got after the World Cup. 'That was understandable after knocking us out of the World Cup with Portugal. But he has dealt with it so well. He has done all his talking on the pitch. 'I could watch Manchester United just to watch him. He does things with the ball that you don't see anyone else in the world doing the at the minute. He is the best in the world at the moment. 'When he is at his best I don't think there are many people who can stop him. When he is running at you like he does with his skills and tricks, you don't know which way he is going. 'A lot of teams double up on him and he has often said he has two players to beat in every game. 'But you double up on him and then he passes the ball to Wayne Rooney who does the same, so where do you stop? You can't double up on everyone.'

Lampard scores that many goals a season from central midfield

I agree that Ronaldo has had a great season... and his technique is definitely something to hold in awe. I can see why Terry, who's had to face Ronaldo, would say he's at the top of his game.

Nevertheless, looking back at some of Drogba's goals (Liverpool and Barca come to mind), a 30 goal season, and how hard he works for the team even when he's off the ball (in contrast to Christiano), and I'd have to give it to him. I'll admit a bias here, and I still think he has the pain tolerance of a 5 year old, but Drogba is an immovable force wrapped in an unstoppable object.

Interesting that no one has disputed my comment about Essien. I'll reiterate that he was robbed

fairpoint, but he is a central midfielder not a winger, therefore his oppurtunities to score would be far greater due to him playing a central role.

as for essien (so as not to ignore your comment), most improved chelsea player, without a shadow of a doubt, but a mile off of being professional player of the year ;) .

Que!?

While he's not a goalscorer (except in Valencia... yay!), Essien's been a dynamo in 4 different positions this year. He's the most versatile player in the Premiership in terms of quality of play in each position. And when he's played in midfield and runs with the ball, you can see the opponents' midfield open up like the Red Sea in in Cecil B. Demille's 10 Commandments. He's just a friggin' tank in motion.

I repeat, he was robbed!

And I don't think wingers necessarily have fewer chances to score than central midfielders. Almost any goodwinger will cut inside when he gets to the penalty box, usually battling against a full-back. Central midfielders have to run up the middle against 2 central defenders.

thats rubbish, ronaldo plays much higher up the pitch than lampard.............he's more of an old fashioned inside/outside right than a winger.

and fergie regularly employs the 3 forwards system where he's played as 1 of the 3, also the other week against roma he played up front alone after scholes got sent off.

lampard plays much more box to box, altho his best work is in the final 3rd.

8O 8O 8O what is this new language i dont undertand a word of it!!!!8O 8O 8O

and at 5pm on may 20 (obviously allowing for all of fergies stoppage time) when the ref blows and TWGC finish empty handed again, old winker will console himself with the fact that he won both awards!!!

If that's how it ends up, JJ, then winkboy can have all the awards he wants :D
(though it'd be better if we spoke about May 23!)

everyone hates the diving/cheating thing but drogba is really a cut above the rest in that field.

a brick sh!thouse of a man that goes down paris hilton...............like on sat, when he was rolling around like he'd broken something and then proceeded to play for the rest of the game.................and extra time!

hate it when the likes of joey cole, gerrard, owen, etc do the same. in fact, any good/decent player who resorts to that sort of stuff.
