UEFA is to discuss the possibility of expanding the European Championship finals at its Congress in Croatia later this month.

UEFA said that it would present the report to delegates during the January 31 meeting in Zagreb.

UEFA spokesman William Gaillard said various models had been considered up to a maximum of 24 teams.

"They have looked at different numbers and the overall effect of making such changes, including the possible effect on the qualifying round," Gaillard said.

"By expanding the number of teams in the final competition you could actually make the qualifying tournament less interesting so all these factors have to be taken into account."

UEFA have already said that any changes to the tournament's format will not be made until the 2016 competition at the earliest.

Yes, why not 'wild cards' for

Loudest fans
"Biggest Club"
Winners of the Soccer Am Crossbar Challenge
Fastest Mascot
etc.......

there is no need to expand it. the tournament as is represents exactly what is should be - tournament style football with elite teams who have to qualify.

expand it and the qualification becomes meaningless and the initial rounds of the tournament would be dull as fcuk.

more money in the pocket of the UEFA fat cats tho!

Post-Benitez you might be glad of a 'Famous Sense Of Humour' bye into the competition proper!
