ibiza is a great place for twitching, probably better known as birdwatching. not only are there many species of bird which are native to the island but we are also on the migratory path of many other birds in spring and autumn.

i admit to having become interested in birdlife since i got here and have seen a quite rare (i think) blue rock thrush sitting on my back wall, a flock of bright green parrots circling over, and even a budgie the other week, in winter we have an enormous white owl which glides silently over the garden and we constantly have falcons on patrol hunting the voles in the back field.

here's a picture i took at the las salinas salt pans on sunday

This is really good to know as my husband-to-be's parents are really into this and they go travellng all around Europe bird watching! So when they come to Ibiza for our wedding next year they can do a bit of twitching too ;) where should I tell them to go? :)

nice pic el ste. did you know flamingos sleep standing on one leg! :?

on the subject, on my last visit to la isla blanca i was surprised (why, i don't know) to see a kestrel in predatory mode near dc10.

a pedant writes:

people who pass their time and get enjoyment by watching birds go about their daily buisness: flocking, nesting, preening, eating and take a passing interest in what species they see etc (ie you and i) are bird watchers

twitchers is a specific term for those (sad) people whose interest is soley in sighting, noting and listing rare and unusual birds ( the same behaviour type as trainspotters or djs)
