Hola everyone

We've just moved into our new flat, and thankfully our family and friends have been very generous with unwanted furniture/goods that they've given us..... HOWEVER!

We have been given a TV by a family friend who assured us it was in perfect working condition. It's a Goodmans 32inch old style (with the big back) TV. After poor Jon had lugged it all the way up the stairs, we turned it on and it doesn't bl00dy work!
When you turn it on at the plug, it comes on, but is on standby. When you try to take it off standby, it tries to flicker on for the briefest of moments, then it turns itself off again and goes back to being on standby. Plus we can smell a slight burning small coming out of the back.
Does this sound like it's a gonner to you? Has anyone else heard of this problem? The TV hasn't been used for over a year, could it be a dust buildup inside it?

Basically is it worth us trying to sort it out, or just getting rid of the thing and buying a new one! :evil:

If so.... how the hell do we get rid of a massive TV like this? Just dump it? 8O

Sounds knackered to me Miss Boo. Take to local council dump - they have a separate section for such items.

sounds shagged to me, you could try a repair, but you can pick up tvs really cheap these days so is it worth it. I would dump it and buy a new one, from somewhere like tesco or asda, 12mth guarantee And if you can't be arsed to lug it all the way back downstairs you could have a rock n roll moment?
 
It probably wouldn't hurt to have a repairman come, take a look and give an estimate.

In all likelihood, repair costs will be high enough to justify tossing the thing and buying a new one. But it never hurts to doublecheck.

The humongous old-style TV that came with our apartment died a year or two ago and we found out it would be $250 to fix it... about the cost of the new (unfortunately smaller :evil:) TV our landlords replaced it with.

Just getting a professional to check it would be around £30-£40 already wont it?

That's what I'd have thoguht - hardly worth it.

If it were me, I'd be thinking "just how often am I going to be able to throw a tv out of my window in my life?" :lol:

Ah, ya... for you guys I suppose it would be expensive. I think I only paid around 10 quid when I did it... plus the guy did something that made the TV work for an extra week or so :lol:
 
TV Update:

Last night Jon had the clever idea of turning the TV on and off over and over again to see if it would turn itself on properly. He done that a few times, then the TV let out this high pitched long beeping noise, like it was about to blow up. Any ideas what that was?!
