Travel money cards

My last two visits abroad I have used the post office money card but they seem to have changed the format, charging withdrawal fees plus the fees requested by the actual machine.

Anyone have any other recommendations for travel money cards. Preferably with free withdrawals?

Thanks.

Can't recommend these enough. They were like a God send - much safer than taking cash out and more practical than traveller's cheques which are on the wane.

Had my own reservations initially, but used for the first time this year and was ideal:

used the caxton card in ibiza last year, was great!

only downside is the cash points over there dont tell you what your balance is

I am considering a pre loaded money card for my trip this year. What are the fees attached to making a withdrawl from a ATM machine :?:

I hate taking cash with me and despise travellers cheques....

No fees for Caxton when withdrawing from an ATM or using as a debit at POS in a store or restaurant WHEN IN THE EUROZONE.

You will be charged if you use it to do the same in the UK.

I use mine specifically for holiday, and it's a dream. If you have any funds left over, simply transfer the money back into your British current account - simple.

Think there is also a 5 euro charge for replacement card if yours is lost or stolen, and it will be shipped out to you within 2 days.

Also the other 'limitations' are that you can only withdraw 200 euros per day, and/or maximum of 2 withdrawals in any 24hr period.

But tbh, I never encountered a problem.

Do this. You won't be disappointed :)

Just had a look at the website and was about to apply until I saw the T&C's. Basically if you load the card with more than £1k and the company goes bust, there is no chance of you getting money back.

I might check out the pre paid card my bank offers.

if you load it day before you go, and your going 1 week/2weeks what are the chances of that happening? very slim imo

I was going to apply for one of the caxton cards, but changed my mind, they needed to know too much information ie, Mothers maiden name, and my passport number !!!!!!
Not quite sure why they needed that info, you dont need to give that info to open a bank account, so dont see why you need it to open a pre-load card

We got one of the Thomas Cook ones for this year after being hit with £60 worth of bank charges and a crap exchange rate last year

Agreed. I am now looking at the Thomas Cook card which offers the same exchange rate as the caxton card

the other cool thing about the caxton card is you load it by text message and also if you need to know your balance you text them and they text you straight back. Its the best thing I have ever had in 20 years of travelling. (as long as you have a mobile). Also, exchange rate wise I have only found one company to beat them and by not very much, but it was a place where you change up money rather than go to an atm when you are on resort. Well worth it.
