Travel Insurance - why is it needed?

Not sure about delays but Monarch paid us out £800 for our stolen luggage at new year from Barcelona, which more than covered the losses :P

So i suppose if you have your E111 you are usually covered for luggage etc, but only if the luggage has been checked in. Best to check the airlines policy first however.

I think you can get quite cheap travel cover from the post office now which can cover you for a year if you're planning on travelling a lot.

E111 is for medical, and most items in luggage is covered by household insurance.

But back to my orginal question is a ride in an ambluance free or a small cost?

Your E111 isn't worth the paper its written on!

It'll provide you with seriously basic medical cover, but it won't cover you for the following-
being delayed,
loosing luggage,
if you need flying home in an emergency, (i.e if someone dies)
legal expences,
cancellation (if you cancel your holiday if you are ill)
if you lose your passport
if any money is stolen
if you are hijacked (extreme - but possible)
hospital benifit (being paid if you spend a long duration ill)
if you die (covers the cost of your body being flown home to a weeping mum and dad)

any questions....

Most good bank accounts give free travel insurance (although don't confuse this with "travel accident insurace" which is worse than an E111!)

if you live near a university, the local student travel centre should be able to sort you out with quality cover at bugger all cost, and you dont need to be a student to take your policy with them, so long as your under 25. either that or you could try a site like moneysupermarket.com to shop for the best deals.

methinks a bit of travel agent license there caroline.

the e111 is a great piece of paper. it gives you access to the medical services in ibiza quickly and easily. just turn up at the health centres or hospital with it and you'll soon get treatment from a health service which is infinitely better than the one you've left behind in britain. believe me' if i was seriously ill and someone said i was going to be repatriated they'd have to drag me kicking and screaming from the semi private ward i was in!
