apparently it's written by the same guy that wrote alias, which I've not seen, but that means that you never understand everything fully until the final series (i.e. could be 7 years before we really know what's going on)
interesting theory is that they are all in purgatory (the island) and they have to prove their worth before they can go to heaven..
