Well I'm happy that the people have made the right choice :D

(or the best choice, at least!)

When i fell asleep on the sofa  Cons only had 4 seats to Labours 70 odd, so was quite suprised to see how well they had recovered when i woke up!

Chewie - don't expect you're very happy today!! Opinion poll this morning showed 37% think Howard should resign immediately 8O But to be fair, that's probably mostly the Labour electorate thats voted that way

im very happy with the result.

labour majority down by 100, share of the winning vote lowest in modern govt, Galloway getting back in.

yep, a shining endorsement if i ever saw one.

lets have this conversation in 4 years time. ;)

 admit defeat!!

Tory seats are up by about 30 on 2001, hardly a stomping victory is it! And would they have gained those seats if it wasn't for the Iraq issue?

Blair is PM material, Howard is not! Thank the lord that the majority of this country see that!!

Only one party can be the majority winner tho Sil!!

And there can only be one PM!

37% out of 100% of votes cast isnt a huge majority.

and considering most of the South of the country has turned back to blue, kinda makes the next one very interesting indeed.

8)

And how funny is this picture??!!

yes but what will have happened by then? people now have time to forget the war issue and obviously next election depends on what happens between now and then doesn't it.

to stand a remote chance of victory at the next election the Tories need a good leader, not some mamby pamby dithery old fool!

in terms of votes cast 37% isn't a majority at all!

They won with the lowest share of the vote ever for a winning party, and only have the great british electoral system to thank for managing to hold onto power. However, I don't think the Conservatives can be pleased with what they did either. 33% of the vote does not signify that they are back as a serious party. I forecast the usual infighting and back biting that follows a conservative defeat.

i was shocked to see that Rusty Lee (TV:AM cook from the 80's) was standing as a UKIP candidate.

Of course, by majority - you mean the 30% odd of the UK population that voted for labour. With the poor show for voting, thats actually how much of the population wanted labour. Yeah - big victory that!

Gotta admit, it's funny watching you all back and forth about the election

The view from abroad is: Labor won. Anytime you have a large majority in a parliamentary system (and 60-70 seats is a large majority, even in a 600-seat chamber) then you won!

I would see the Torrie boost as more of an endictment against the Iraq war than an embracing of Howard & co. I'm curious to see what happens next time around when both parties have new leaders. ;)

unfortunately with Blair and Brown, we'll be heading into Europe faster than you can shovel shit.
3 cheers for the Union, God Save The Queen.

not this time i dont think. (unless the media decide its time to, but me thinks the Blair/Brown thingie will rumble on).

ok the tories share of the vote hasnt increased. but like you said Seats Means MP's... and gaining 30odd seats is a damn bit better than losing 100... [/img]

I know but post-election day it's always the same: if you are not the legal winner you are the moral winner. And if you are not the moral winner you managed to get satisfactory results.... Same in Spain ;)

Anway, how is the proportion left-right now?

The tories seem not to be the party "for the people" unless they have a real big leader...ie Mr Churchill, Mrs Thatcher!!! I would personally like to see Michael Portillo...............or Jose Mourhino?? ;)
