Hi

On Amazon, there are 2 books listed by Stephen Armstrong called:

"The White Island : The Extraordinary History of the Mediterranean's Capital of Hedonism " (June 1st 2005)

and also

"The White Island : Two Thousand Years of Pleasure in Ibiza" (June 1st 2004)

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/search-handle-form/ref=sr_sp_go_as/026-2588147-4401266

Anyone know what the difference is? Or is it the same book with a new name and cover?

Amazon is selling the 2004 book for £9.09, and the 2005 one for £6.39.

Cheers.

Dave.

Well here's a librarian's eye view: The 2005 edition is published by a different company. It also has an extra 40 pages so I am suspecting it is the same book re-released with a few extra photos or perhaps larger text? It would seem unusual for the same author to write two books with almost identical names within a year.

Hi

Yeah, I noticed that the 2005 edition's extended title has removed the word "history" and "hedonism" from it and replaced it with "pleasure". This adds weight to your suggestion of it being a re-release of some kind... possibly dumbing down the title, and possibly the content, for the younger masses.

I'm hoping someone on here, who might have been involved helping with his work at some point, might have some direct knowledge of what the changes are.

My local Waterstones hasn't got copies of either of them in stock, so I can't go and browse them.

Thanks for your advice.

Dave

I'm 99 per cent certain it's the same book. I have the large format paberback that was well overpriced at £12 (2004 ed). I supplied some pictures for the book. The book did not as well as expected. It was then reissued in a smaller paperback version, at a keener price.

I'd rather not comment on the quality of the book too much, as there are serious copyright infringement issues being looked at right now by lawyers in the UK!

Lifted from Amazon:

The extraordinary history of the Mediterranean's capital of hedonism - Ibiza Received wisdom has it that Ibiza is an island of Union Jack-shorted beerboys singing 'Here we go, here we go, here we go' on their way to a 24-hour rave. But the reality of the island today is very different. It is, and always has been, a magnet for hedonists, but la Isla Blanca is actually a sophisticated, cosmopolitan island of enormous natural beauty - far more Jade Jagger than Jordan. The island's history reads like a history of pleasure itself. The Carthaginians established a cult there to Tanit, their goddess of sex, around 650 BC and named the Island after Bez, their god of dance. Roman centurions in need of a bit of down time between campaigns would go to Ibiza to get their kicks. And over the centuries virtually every culture around the Mediterranean has used the island either as a playground or as a dump for the kind of people who didn't quite fit in back home, but who you'd probably quite like to meet at a party. Stephen Armstrong tells for the first time the fascinating history of this fantasy island. It is a story of invasions and migrations, of artists and conmen, of drop outs and love-ins. This narrative is framed by Stephen's highly entertaining experiences during one long, golden summer on Ibiza, an island where anything can happen - and it usually does.

IMO it's a good read.

sounds like the spirit of ibiza and its hedonism, is emplemented in every rock on the island and in the hearts of people visiting/living there.

It's a great read. Well written and covers a lot more than any other book I've read on the island.

That and the Rough Guide ( ;) ) are my Ibiza companions.

so what do theyh tell you in the book?

About the actual history of the island, right from ancient times to how places like Pikes and Manumission became. Some great interviews and stories.
