The RAF have just had to escort some Russian fighter jets away from our airspace.

What's up? More macho posturing from Putin, or something more serious?

Whenever I see a picture of him, I think of barred windows and electrodes.

Er, so threatening military force is the way to solve extradition disputes?

By that argument, Gordon Brown should be sending Tornados to do a flyover of Moscow, in support of Britain's request to have the bloke accused of murdering Litvinenko extradited to stand trial in London.

No, of course not. Just pointing out that tensions have been running a bit high lately. And the count is something like 30 to 1 on extradition requests so it's hardly comparable!

Russia's been flexing its muscles a lot lately... fighters did a flyover near the US base at Guam not long ago.

In some ways, the current situation is the West's own fault. Shouldn't have treated Russia as a pariah/2nd-class citizen after the fall of the Soviet Union. Russians don't like to be made to feel inferior, as were in some world affairs over the past decade... now they're trying to show that economically (and militarily) they're a country that must be dealt with.
 
I was speaking to a Russian fella today at work.

Me : "Old Putin is flexing his mucles a bit lately ain't he ?"

Russki : "Putin makes Russia very strong." In the best Russian power statement ever.

Me : "Strong for what though ?"

Russki : "Mwhahahahaha" In best Russian evil laugh.
