Played in Belfast on Friday night and what a show it was! They played in the Odyssey, which I would say is over twice the size of the King's Hall, where they used to play when they were at their biggest, and at least five times the size of the Ulster Hall, where they played last year, so I thought they would really struggle to get a decent crowd. In the end, standing was sold out and they had made a very respectable dent in the seating too. The whole place was full of mentalists, mostly pissed but no shortage of other supplements doing the rounds either.
Musically, they started with Break and Enter and fired straight into Their Law, Breathe and Jericho (yes, Jericho!). After some other older stuff, things went downhill a bit as they played a couple off the new album, which I don't have - I recognised Spitfire, which is great, although it sounds more like Rage Against the Machine than anything else. There was one tune about going back to school, which was well dodgy, and a few other guitar-heavy/Keith-vocalled tunes which were even dodgier.
Surprise appearances came from Diesel Power, Climbatize and a rocked-up version of Speedway, Voodoo People got an airing (nearly tore the roof of the place), the obligatory Firestarter was thrown in and the main set finished with No Good, which never fails to please in Belfast.
The encore was probably the best 20 minutes of music I've heard this year. They came back onstage with Poison and Smack My Bitch Up, then the biggest shocker of the night - CHARLY! I didn't even dare to dream they would play it so went appropriately insane, then they finished with Out of Space, which was possibly even better.
If they are playing near you and there are any tickets left I strongly advise you to go. The stage set-up is awesome too and Maxim is still a scary bastard, even if he did come dressed as Adam Ant for some reason. If I really have to nit-pick, I would have liked to hear Your Love, but apart from that it was a truly great show.
