Hey all,

In the 2nd half of last year I was posting my podcast pretty regularly on the forum but haven't done so for a while. I've just reached #50 episodes so this seems like a good time to start doing it again, and set up a single thread for it. Episode 50 is huge episode so had to get it on here. Also, I'm mixing up the regular format as of episode 51, so again, seems like a good time to start sharing them here again.

In each post I'll give a condensed version of what I've written on the blog, but you can always read the full thing by going to: http://www.philharmonicpodcast.blogspot.co.uk/

THE PHIL-HARMONIC PODCAST EPISODE #50

cover50.jpg

Without me even realising it, The Phil-Harmonic Podcast had its 2nd birthday a few weeks ago and, not long after, it reaches the arguably more significant milestone of 50 episodes....

Now that the podcast is 2 years old, I can't help but get nostalgic. I don't mean nostalgic for the records that I've played on TPHP since it began. That wouldn't be particularly nostalgic for a start. I didn't want to do a review podcast as such. No, approaching 50 episodes actually got me thinking about my musical life before the podcast – particularly that window of years 2 or 3 years just after taking up DJing in 2007....

As well as taking up DJing in 2007, in the same year I started doing overall ‘Reviews of the Year' on Last.fm. Just like my Year Mixes now, they were called ‘That Was...' (I never actually did a proper Year Mix in 2007, that came the year later.) These reviews included a Top 20 rundown of my trance and progressive favourites of the year.

For Episode 50, I've simply gone back to those charts and plucked the Top 4 from each - no editing; just exactly how the charts were when they were compiled. This is interesting, because it's brought up the question of how well these tracks have stood the test of time, both for myself and other people.

By including 2011 in this equation there is some podcast overlap. But I stopped short of including 2012, simply because That Was 2012 has barely left my SoundCloud page....

The likes of Brace Yourself, Into Something and Apple, in particular, are tracks that when they make a return it's like hearing them for the first time all over again. They have stayed with me always. (That in itself sounds like a contradiction, but you know what I mean.) Brace Yourself is actually one of the few tunes that gives me goose bumps every single time I hear it. Definitely, and without even a moment to reconsider, my favourite record of the last 6 years or so.

Some are just clubbing memories that will be part of me forever. Like completely losing my **** (and I mean completely) to Vanilla at Creamfields 2010, Sander playing Bliksem in that 2009 Global Gathering set or hearing Smack twice in one evening seeing PvD at Nation in Liverpool in 2008. Soulseeker and Undercurrent instantly transport me back to being stood in my room at 3rd year Uni, in front of those Pioneer 100s – probably annoying the **** out of the couple living downstairs.

That only covers 2 hours though. And for some reason I felt uncomfortable leaving it at 2 hours. The set needed an extended period of more up-tempo stuff. I've handpicked a few gems, again with more than a few nostalgic touches.

Let me know what you think guys. Gonna be doing the next two episodes today, first batch of the new weekly format.

THE PHIL-HARMONIC PODCAST EPISODE #51

We've passed 50 episodes; now we press on into a new phase of the podcast with some changes to freshen things up.
I've felt for a while that the format of TPHP needed a shake up. My output has been solid of late, but after a number of specials and milestones, mixes have been very long and there's an argument for saying a bit of focus and drive has been lost. It's quantity over quality, as I just bombard amidst a wave of enthusiasm...

So where to go from here? Well, I'm now going to post weekly sets but reduce them down to an hour a piece. So everyone will still be getting the same 2 hours of music every fortnight and, in theory, I won't really have to change my podcast ‘creation routines' that much at all. I'll just be breaking it up and uploading and posting more frequently.

Now, I love taking audiences on a rounded 2 hours+ journey. In essence, that extended journey is what DJing is really all about. With that in mind, I'm going to commit myself to doing reasonably regular ‘specials' that do take the audience on that more engaging, drawn out trip. And in a sense, that will make specials more…. well, special… without being ridiculously long. (The 4 hour Ibiza Special last year was indeed ridiculous.)

For regular offerings the switch to an hour is quite a simple theory and it's all about how most people are able to fit their weekly listening into their hectic routines. Most people, including myself, listen to music to and from work. And when you consider that most peoples' daily commutes don't exceed more than about 30-40 mins (my own currently being almost exactly 40 mins from door to door – 25 mins actually on London's Tube), it can often be hard to fit in a 2 hour set into that travelling. When you come back to a set, paused for 24 hours or longer, the intended flow is completely broken. A longer set is all about momentum – that is completely wasted if it's not consumed in one hit.

By splitting it down the middle, I hope it can be a more neatly packaged, more consumable offering and that it forces me to think a little bit more creatively to keep things interesting. One episode will be from the slower more progressive end of the spectrum (denoted by the yellow cover), while its sister episode (denoted by the red artwork) will be more for the trance purists. But there will be an element of crossover. Getting that crossover right will be the new challenge.

THE PHIL-HARMONIC PODCAST EPISODE #52

Well, what a weekend it has been already. The Easter weekend is never a dull one and this year has been no exception... and we're only at Saturday. It's hardly begun.

On Thursday night I made my DJing return at Brighton's Cube Bar for Transcend's Bank Holiday special, warming up for J00F Sessions signed psy-merchant, Dan Ascherl. It was a another milestone for me in the sense that it was the first time I've been on the bill with what you might call a 'recognised' name in the scene.

The crowd down at Transcend are always excellent value and, as me and one of my fellow DJs were saying to each other on the night, it's a night that genuinely has the potential to grow into something special and significant. I'm grateful that I've been able to be involved from (almost) the very start of it....

...The podcast returns in it's new weekly, 1 hour format. I say, 1 hour - this one has ran over slightly this week. In terms of this new format I'm still working out what fits and what doesn't, so probably unsurprising that an early episode has become ever so slightly extended.

As denoted by our red artwork, this is our more uplifting, driving end of things. There was plenty to fit in and, my word, picking a 'Tune Of The Episode' was very hard this week. I'll let the set do the talking because it really is a belter. Enjoy!

THE PHIL-HARMONIC PODCAST EPISODE #53

An unusual episode this week in the sense that it draws on a number of artists and labels that are relative unknowns in more mainstream trance circles. The likes of Spin Twist, Future Focus and Sedna Recordings are not your Armada's and Anjuna's of the trance world. Great tracks here nevertheless.

Bar the opening couple of tracks, and probably our closing two as well, I've gone for quite a dark, at times aggressive, feel while still keeping the tempo quite steady. In all honesty, while not being my 'Tune Of The Episode', Aerofoil's nasty new release, WoW!, really got me going and really forms the basis for this set's overall tone and direction.

Some sunnier vibes do open things up courtesy of Ad Brown's From Within, one of the early tracks in my recent set at Transcend's bank holiday special, and Super8 & Tab's Anjuna Volume 10 offering, L.A., a huge highlight from their set at Ministry Of Sound last weekend.

Watch out for a very cheeky bit of psytrance, something that is being reintroduced into the more mainstream scene at the moment via the likes of Simon Patterson, Bryan Kearney and Jordan Suckley. Klopfgeister is another name from Hamburg's absolutely thriving progressive psy scene and I finally got around to listen to his 2012 album, Smiles & More, a few weeks ago. Clearly one of the best electronic album from last year.

Our Harmonic oldie this week was a hard one to pick. After the demonic rhythms of WoW! and the ominous piano of Face Value, I felt we needed to end on a more positive note. And positivity comes flowing courtesy of Grrreat's huge drop and relentlessly sunny melodic combinations. Another brilliant record from 2009 and one that really chases away those crap British weather blues. More of that sunshine to come on The Phil-Harmonic Podcast I can promise.

THE PHIL-HARMONIC PODCAST EPISODE #54

As weekends go this weekend has been a bit of a belter. One of the busiest and best I've had since moving to London, sampling both Paul Van Dyk and some truly great house music, whilst also catching up with so many friends and meeting some new people too.
And this week's podcast is one that comfortably matches the magnitude of the last few days' excesses. This one is pretty damn huge and contains a few stand out contenders for Tune Of The Year, even at this early stage of the year. It's a full on trance thrill ride.

There was a lot of talk towards the end of 2012 about how many producers were planning to go back to their traditional trance roots. The whole ‘Who's Afraid of 138?' campaign has really picked up some momentum this year as the whole trouse fad starts to wear a little thin. Generally-speaking, the uplifting material coming out in 2013 has so far comfortably out-battled the slow-tempoed variants.

Every tune does some audio damage in this episode, but the real stand outs come one after the other in our middle section. The spellbindingly serene vocal breakdown in The Wind, the pure euphoria of Darren Porter's Illustrious remix and, Tune Of The Episode, the all-round stunning, Phoenix by Matt Bukovski. Blue Soho have definitely been the label to watch out for in 2013.

Our final track is Alphazone under their little used or known Aramanja alias, their remix of Ibiza Sun. The original featured on Resonate 5 back in 2006. Evoking a little bit of summer with the Ibiza Special approaching.

THE PHIL-HARMONIC PODCAST EPISODE #55

It's a very big episode and one I redrafted a couple of times, which is often a good sign. There is some accidental, yet, significant homage paid to a few of my recent trips to Ministry of Sound.

At said clubbing establishment, Norin & Rad played the Sick Individuals Remix of I Love by Icona Pop and the three-way SvD, Mark Knight and Underworld collab, Ten. Both appear here. Super8 & Tab dropped the Club Mix of Black Room Boy. Wasn't sure about that Club Mix at first, but it is clearly huge. Newcomer, Kim Fai slipped us EDX & Leventina's remix of Blood Pressure. Shazamed and duly noted for TPHP.

In searching for older tracks for this episode, it was reasonably inevitable that some Depeche Mode would sneak in there. The Essex synthpop giants released their new album, Delta Machine, recently. Unfortunately, it ain't particularly good. In fact, it's ****. But the disappointment of that has got me listening to Sounds Of The Universe from 2009 on repeat, an album which is, quite frankly, stupidly good. With Dave Gahan's vocals on Perfect, as well as the voices of Ellie Goulding and Lana Del Rey, this episode does have an accessible touch to it.

And in other news, your ‘Tune Of The Episode' is Broning's Smash! and the final oldie is via Marco V.

THE PHIL-HARMONIC PODCAST EPISODE #56

So much good melodic music in this week's uptempo episode. I've started things off with a darker, tech angle in the shape of Boom, Zeus and Vanilla, three tracks which slot very nicely into each other and a good way to ease into the more driving stuff.

Later on, look out for those 2 Photographer productions, an incredible new Bryan Kearney uplifter and the Mortal Kombat themed banger, Fatality. Also, a couple of oldies that I think will surprise people this week - in particular an old remix by John O'Callaghan that will get a few memories flowing for anyone who was clubbing when it was released. Really takes this mix in a welcome new direction too.

THE PHIL-HARMONIC PODCAST EPISODE #57

The Phil-Harmonic Podcast returns for its slower-tempoed, progressive/trouse leg on this (in the UK at least) fine, sunny bank holiday weekend. We are on the cusp of summer now; you can just about smell it in the air. Cider, festivals, barbecues, weddings even... the summer promises much...

...This week's podcast has Rank 1's fingers all over it - a new single (Floorlifter), a new remix (Under The Gun), a track that was originally engineered by them (Humanoid) and the ending oldie is also from their own label, High Contrast Recordings. So, regardless of any sub-standard mixing you may or may not hear, the Dutch duo ensure the standard of tuneage is still top shelf.

New Israeli producer, Avi, also serves up two productions, a couple of absolute electro slammers including our 'Tune Of The Episode', Stream. Also... look out for Basque The Dog. He's a big fella!

1. Hard Rock Sofa - Rasputin [Axtone Records]
2. Dannic - Clobber [Toolroom Records]
3. Tasadi & Aryas - Lost Garden (Faruk Sabanci Dirty Rock Mix) [Sedna Recordings]
4. Jochen Miller - Humanoid (Ali Wilson Remix) [High Contrast Recordings]
5. Solid Stone - Not Really [Saturate Audio]
6. Digital X - Stealth [Coldharbour Recordings]
7. Rank 1 - Floorlifter [High Contrast Recordings]
8. Conjure One feat. Leigh Nash - Under The Gun (Rank 1 Remix) [S107 Recordings]
9. Chris Schweizer & Tomas Heredia - Darksiders [A State Of Trance]

Haven't posted a podcast here for so so long. Really slipped outta the habit of coming here. :spank: My bad - I put it down to not going to Ibiza this year. Seeing the mid-season excitement hurts.

Anyway, here are a couple of recent sets....

THE PHIL-HARMONIC PODCAST EPISODE #59
THE IBIZA SPECIALS PART 1 - POOLSIDE PROGRESSIVE 2013

Another podcast, this time a return to my tried and test Ibiza Specials format. I promised when shifting to hour long episodes that there would occasionally be 2 hour episodes along the way. Here is an example of that.

Normally a 'special' episode like this would be accompanied by a really lengthy blog entry but, after another weekend of outrageous excess, my brain can't quite manage that. So, apologies in advance for this rather pathetic entry. I'll let the set speak, more or less, for itself.

I'm not actually planning a trip to Ibiza in 2013 but I thought that needn't restrict me to actually delivering some Ibiza inspired music. They'll be 2 Ibiza Specials this summer - this one is all about cool, poolside vibes. Enjoy!

1. 4-Strings - Take Me Away (Into The Night) (Deadmau5 Remix) [CDR]
2. Jonas Steur feat. Julie Thompson - Side By Side [Black Hole Recordings]
3. EDX - Touched [Toolroom Records]

6. Dave Horne - Bright (Castra & Sovve Deep Mix) [Perceptive Deep]
7. Sunny Lax - Miele [Songbird]
8. Shane Halcon - Siberia [Morrison Recordings]
9. Smith & Pledger - Northern Lights (Phil Johnston vs. Aspekt Remix) [Anjunabeats]

THE PHIL-HARMONIC PODCAST EPISODE #64

Observant followers of the podcast will realise two things about TPHP this week.

Firstly, I've thrown a bit of a curve ball in that, instead of uploading a more progressive set, I've delivered another uptempo monster complete with its corresponding red artwork. This is largely because I felt like I had to break the monotony of the current two week routine. Its also partly because this particular episode needed to be heard, and quick.

Second thing to notice is that we have a bit of a theme going here. Many of the tracks in this week's podcast are up-to-the-minute 'modern' reworks of old classics. These kind of reworks are not uncommon in the trance scene these days. Often they never get full releases and are released to the public as free downloads. I just happened to harvest an unusually large crop of them in a single week and, thankfully, they were able to find their way into the same tracklist.

Like Simon Patterson's psy-fronted reshaping of his own track, Thump from 2009, Darren Porter's brilliant remix of haunting classic Ralph Fridge - Angel (the original has featured in the podcast before) and Allen & Envy giving Marc Dawn's Expander a **** tonne more bass.
