The Phil-Harmonic Podcast - The Ibiza Specials 2012

Hi all,

My podcast is the middle of its 'Ibiza Specials' phase at the moment as I build up towards my own trip there in August. One episode you've already seen...

Spotlight On Ibiza  http://www.spotlight-forums.com/showthread.php?t=75185
(Had such good feedback on that one that I'm gonna keep on plugging it to death  - If you missed it, deep/tech/ibizan house set based on the suggestions in the Tracks For 2012 thread.)

Instead of creating multiple threads, I thought I'd create one for the remaining episodes in this little series. These mixes will be the perfect iPod companions for anyone on here going out to Ibiza in the coming months.

Post-Spotlight On Ibiza, we move gradually back towards my usual trance, but it is only gradually - bringing up the pace and melodic element bit by bit.

First up in this thread...

THE PHIL-HARMONIC PODCAST EPISODE 35 - THE IBIZA SPECIALS PART 2
POOLSIDE PROGRESSIVE 2012 - SIDE A

A note from my blog....

"Many of you will remember my Poolside Progressive episode from last year – Episode 13 – it was arguably my best episode from last year and that was because it was a near perfect translation of an idea in my head into a living, breathing set.

The brief was simple – sunny, hangover cure music to lead the listener out of that dark post-night out cave and get them basking in the Mediterranean sunshine. The challenge this year was to repeat the feat. Easy, right?

What I've come up with is an episode that fills the same brief but in quite a different way. Last year's was generally a tad warmer and more summery, building up to its crescendo more quickly, but slipping steadily back down the other way towards melancholy. This year's starts out in a much deeper, more sullen place, building much more gradually but to a pacier, more striking peak. There is plenty of sun but maybe with an icier, earlier morning sharpness in places. If last year's lead us out of the draining afternoon sun and into the sunset; this one is the birth of a brand new day...

Ultimately, what is great about this set is that it strikes a refreshing balance between the softer, mainstream trance and the much moodier, progressive underworld. It draws on many recognisable names in trance music while giving very careful nods to some other areas of dance music that I love but don't often get to celebrate on TPHP.

And although maybe not as good as last year's Episode 13, it is a much better ‘follow on' from the quite sophisticated, deep feel of Spotlight On Ibiza in Part 1 – giving the 2012 Ibiza Specials a very nice sense of even, meaningful progression. That progression will continue into Part 3."

Now this will be interesting, I was just about to go to bed ffs :D
Not usually into progressive anything these days so I will listen with an open mind and let you know my expert(none expert) verdict tomorrow :p

Loving this one again Phil,

Awesome track selection throughout!

Thanks a lot, mate. Last year's version of this was, if people don't mind me saying, a bit special, but I think I've just about done the concept justice with this new version. I do enjoy these because it's something you have to tackle with a completely different head on.

Listeners will notice the nice sense of progression in the Ibiza episodes this year. Building nicely from ep to ep. ;)

Nice to see that open-mindedness, mate! :D Couple of tracks might be far too 'cheesey' for your ears, but as mentioned in the blog, was trying to strike a balance between the underground and the accessible for that poolside setting. When all 4 episodes are laid out, you'll see where I was going with this overall.

Well I did try
To be honest mate it is not my thing....at all. It reminds me of what I used to listen to as a teen and I guess Ibiza was still very much non commercial and very much a place for trance? But these days I love pounding hard techno :) I did give it 10 mins and skipped through the set but I just can't get excited by it.
Please don't take it as snobbery though I try to listen to all the guys sets on here. House music is fun and I love the Ibiza style house to, so I am not qualified to comment on such a set.
Keep up the good work though and I look forward to your end of season Ibiza set ;)

Don't worry, mate. No offence taken. As a fan of electronic music, my taste is crazy broad and I'm very big on the idea that most good electronic music is about mood and situation. (I listen to psy-trance, minimal techno, pure ambient, cafe del mar albums, tech house, hard dance, all sorts - was listening to Infected Mushroom on the way home from work today ;))

But, primarily, I'm all about my trance and this set keeps some of the deeper moods from Spotlight On Ibiza but then eases gently into the semi-commercial trance-prog side... And I'll develop on that in Part 3.

The remit is hangover cure - when the sun is shining and I have the headache to end all headaches, this is the kind of music I'm listening to in the pool.

New episode of my Ibiza Specials has just gone up. Here's the deal -

THE PHIL-HARMONIC PODCAST EPISODE 36 - THE IBIZA SPECIALS PART 3
POOLSIDE PROGRESSIVE 2012 - SIDE b

...last year I always planned Poolside Progressive to be two parts. The idea was that part 1 eased the hangover; part 2 pushed up the tempo and picked up the mood ahead of another night's clubbing.

Unfortunately, part 2 didn't turn out so well, and in complete frustration I didn't even bother to attempt it again. I just left it at part 1. Poolside Progressive (Episode 13) turned out to be my personal favourite episode from last year, so given that part 2 didn't really do the first justice, I was right to drop it.

This year I was even more determined to see through the 2 sided Poolside concept. But I thought I'd approach it from a new angle. Instead of just moving up the tempo, I thought, what would be better around a chilled out poolside than the opportunity to belt out some of the best, most popular vocals in trance music? A poolside sing-a-long, if you will.

As regular listeners will know, I never normally compile tracklists with a number of vocals in mind. I usually make selections based on other factors. In a way, this was a unique opportunity...

Sit back on your sunlounger – you are about to be treated to two doses of Emma Hewitt, as well as the fabulous voices of Sarah Howells, Aruna, Ashley Tomberlin, Jes Brieden, Richard Bedford and, the queen of euphoric Ibiza moments herself, Sarah McLachlan. Musically, they are supported by the likes of Myon & Shane 54, Gabriel & Dresden, Above & Beyond, Armin Van Buuren and Maor Levi.

Fantastic! Good to see this bouncing back up the Music Forum. Thanks, Helen. :)

Plenty more to come from me in the coming weeks. Gonna upload my big 4 hour Ibiza mix tomorrow I think.

Was pretty annoyed when I got back from Ibiza that some record label has filled a copyright infringement against a track in one of my recent episodes. I've challenged it. Hopefully I don't get called to some court case somewhere. 8O :D

What ****ers

Hope you had a top time (I'm sure you did) :D

OK, here it is. The big one! My 4 hour set based on the suggestions of my fellow Ibiza villa guests. The trance fans among you will all agree that me and my friends have impeccable taste :p

THE PHIL-HARMONIC PODCAST EPISODE 37 - THE IBIZA SPECIALS PART 4
REQUESTS OF THE VILLA GUESTS 2012

With 16 people due to stay in our villa this year, the annual requests mix was also going to be bigger, with far more packed into it. The selections made by everyone were once again top notch and as it was all coming together I felt the whole thing was maybe shaping up better than 2011. When I started collecting people's picks I actually anticipated more house music than last year, but the group's love for trance shone through as always – their love for this genre is absolute unquenchable.

In the end, when it was finished I actually felt a bit deflated. There were a couple of transitions that really blotted the copybook and I couldn't help but feel looking at it that, at 4 hours, it was just far too long. And I was right, it was too long. It was so long that my copy of Mixmeister couldn't load it properly to do my usual chopping and trimming. I had to resort to messing around with Audacity just to attach the intros and outros.

When we actually got to Ibiza, my iPod refused to play through any of the iDocks we had with any real clarity or volume. On my iDock, the file just kept stopping and restarting randomly. We managed to hook it up to the larger villa hi-fi but I literally I had wipe everything off my iPod just so we could navigate to the one 4 hour file we were trying to listen to. I think we managed to listen through the entire mix about once while we were out there, but we ended up listening to the first 40 mins about 10 times. So, yeah, in hindsight, this should probably have been 2 mixes of 2 hours each.

Nevertheless, it's still a pretty intense, engaging journey through many styles of trance and progressive music - ranging from recent anthems like Invasion, Loop and Flying Blind, through to completely forgotten classics like Ferry's remix of Somebody, PvD's Time Of Our Lives and Vercocha's remix of Ayla. Some tracks we even heard in the clubs while we were out there. Like Amsterdam at A State Of Trance, On My Way To Heaven at Cream Amnesia and particularly, the undisputed ‘Tune Of The Holiday', Gotye's Somebody That I Used To Know, a tune we heard at least 2 clubs and constantly at the villa...

...If Requests Of The Villa Guests ever does happen again, it won't be this long or all-encompassing. It's a monster, so enjoy it.
