The Phil-Harmonic Podcast Episode 32 - Spotlight On Ibiza

Ok, as promised in the 'Tracks For 2012' thread - here is my attempt at picking out my favourite suggestions from that thread and putting them together in a 2 hour set.

Here's part of what I've written about it in my own blog...

"My Ibiza Specials are in 4 epic parts this year, but rather than have them consecutively throughout June and July, we're going to start them off now and revisit later in July. This will quite neatly mark the start of the Ibiza season.

Actually, we've just had an abnormally glorious week of sunshine here in the UK. I was out in the garden earlier, melting in the sun with a head like a lead balloon – I closed my eyes and just for a split second I could feel that icy pool water on my skin....

Part 1 is something completely new for 2012. This year, in anticipation of my 4th trip to the White Isle, I returned to the Ibiza Spotlight forum to get all the inside gossip on the up-coming season. They have a thread on there called ‘Tracks For 2012' where users post their suggestions for big Ibiza records of the year. As the forum is regularly frequented by Ibiza veterans and cultured house and techno connoisseurs of discerning taste, the suggestions given are always of a high standard and really dissect deep into the core of something that is inexplicably ‘Ibiza'.

This was something I attempted with my ‘Ibiza Loves House Music' episode last year, but the opening 40 mins of that set really only scratched Ibiza's surface. I love house and techno, but my knowledge of it compared to trance made it difficult for me, on my own, to really capture that ‘Ibiza spirit' in a mature a way as I would have liked.

For this week's ‘Spotlight On Ibiza', I've handpicked a selection of the very best suggestions from the ‘Tracks For 2012' thread. It's made for a fantastically deep, textured and sophisticated set that builds nicely to some slightly chunkier, club-orientated grooves later on. 5 of the tracks are my own picks, mainly just to bridge a big harmonic gap between The Major and Sunday At El Row.

Given my DJing background in trance and hard dance music, this was a million miles away from my DJing comfort zone. In fact, this mix starts out at around 20+ beats per minute slower than the music I first attempted to beat-match with on those beloved Pioneer 100s back in 2007. I was really nervous about mixing this set. In reality, it's turned out as well as I could possibly have hoped and I really enjoyed doing it as well. I'm actually proud of myself for not chickening out on it.

Thanks to the members of Ibiza Spotlight for their unwitting input. If you listen, I hope you enjoy it.

In the words of Frankie Wilde, – “Ibiza is…”

On the tracklist here, I've put in brackets next to each track who suggested the tune and/or who made it known that they loved a particular suggestion. Would really appreciate your comments, one and all. :)

Great idea, will have a listen now before work. I follow you now to(but I am not a stalker :D)

Nice one! Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

I think most Spotlighters will enjoy. In fact, I think anyone who knows what Ibiza is about will enjoy. It's not aimed at my usual 'target audience' so don't let it go to waste people. ;)

downloading.

like the intro.

Actually, a little note about the intro. Spotlighters - don't be put off by the intro. It is my regular intro that I use for every episode and normally play trance. The rest of the set is as advertised. ;)

great idea mate, quality tracks....thanks!
Waiting for part 2 :-)

Respect..............cheers Ibizarre del Mar

I'll let the dust settle on this one first, but I think there could well be a part 2 at some point. Maybe at the end of the Ibiza season in Sept/Oct, maybe next year.

Listening back to this a few times over the last week or so, I'm hugely proud of this set. This was as hard as anything I've ever attempted DJing-wise, yet doesn't sound at all inferior to my regular episodes. Hugely enjoyable to mix too.

I have to say I was blown away by the mix it was completely 8)
Don't like the intro though :p But seeing as the rest was so good I will let it go ;)
I would of liked the man with the red face last as I think it is always a good way to sign off a mix like this, bit of everything thrown in and some absolute ****ing bangers :spank:
Looking forward to part 2, and THERE WILL BE A PART 2!
Wish I could mix like you can you post your set up to please?
Tar.

well mixed.

Great to see comments like these. Big thanks, guys. I think that is the Spotlight 'seal of approval'. :)

Don't like the intro though :p

I've had mixed comments about my intro. Some very positive, some quite negative. Probably should have considered dropping it for this episode, but hey, I'm yet to do an ep without it.

Wish I could mix like you can you post your set up to please?

I have Pioneer 800s and a DMX Numark digital mixer (can't remember the exact model, but I think they've stopped making them). And I have a decent Kam speaker/amp set up. No laptops by the way. ;)

Just tuned in, listening through this at work now. :)
Intro sounds far more professional than the one I use for Wavefront Sessions

I think you'll always get good and bad feedback with an intro that bold but then you'll already know this. The magic of that first hour really sends my mind on a journey back to Ibiza and the style of the tunes and the blend is fantastic. I think another towards the end of summer with the big tunes on would be good if you have the time then.
Keep it up any how 8)

I think if I've achieved that for even just one person then that's great because that's exactly what I was looking for.

As I said in the blog, by trusting the taste of Spotlight users I've captured something here that I would've been completely unable to do on my own. The first step to success is acknowledging your own limitations :D - in this case the limitation being extensive knowledge of underground house and/or techno.

I think another towards the end of summer with the big tunes on would be good if you have the time then.

I was thinking it might be cool to start a sticky thread of 'Tunes That Made Your Ibiza 2012' - specifically for big tracks that people have heard in the clubs & bars whilst on holiday this season. And I'd be happy to do a set out of suggestions for that - maybe come September. With enough backing from the Spotlight community, of course. ;)
