the openings - my point of view

This will be my first clubbing only-review and as I haven’t been to any openings before, I cannot compare to other years, but here’s what I did, where I went and what I thought about it...

Thursday May 31st
Salvacion Opening at El Divino

My first visit to El Divino since 2004! When we got there (at around 1:30am), the queue was already remarkable and one hour later, the club was quite full (not packed though). Well, El Divino hasn’t changed much since my first visit 3 years ago. There’s still the beautiful view of Dalt Villa from the terrace, but (imo), if you would take this terrace away, the club could be anywhere in this world; to me, it’s just the club that has the least Ibiza-Groove here on the island. Still, I must say, there were a lot of beautiful people around and in fact, I mostly liked the music David Herrera and Luca Fabiani played! (sounded like: Chicken Lips – He Not In) All in all a good night with fun people!

Friday June 1st
...

No fiestas for me this day. Eden had its Opening (which was quite good and quite busy as people reported) and Bora Bora finally opened as well, one week later than originally announced. Missed Bora Bora as well though because I was busy. Only arrived there after midnight when the open-air fun was already over…

Saturday June 2nd
Privilege Opening

Also for Privilege, it had been quite a while ago since my last visit and I was really eager to see how it would look and sound like! The line-up was tasting; Javi Muñoz, Cirillo, Fabrizio and more of the likes. We arrived there at about 2am and it was already very busy! All the rooms were open and I really liked the vibe in there. Fabrizio played his minimal – techhouse stuff in the main room while Tatto did the same in Cocoloco. We wandered around to see it all and were pleased with what we saw. The Lasershow was impressing (see picture)! The soundsystem was also powerful, only that the adjusting in such a big place probably isn’t that easy; in some places it sounded amazing and pounding as hell while, standing in another place, it obviously was a tad weaker. Later, Jay Haze played in the Main Room and René was on in Cocoloco. (No idea who played in the Backroom). We didn’t last too long this night as we were quite tired and knew there will be a lot more on the menu this weekend…friends who didn’t care about the rest of the weekend (or shall I just say “the brave ones”?) stayed at Privilege till almost 10am!

here's privilege's lasers:

Sunday June 3rd
Space Opening

We started our day with a warm-up dance in the sun at bora bora some time after midday. Then we grabbed some food before we queued up in front of space. It took us half an hour to get in and when we finally were inside, our first stop was the sunset terrace, where oscar cano was dropping deux’ sun rising up – woohoo! Stayed there for a bit, enjoyed the terrace vibe and then made our way to the car park floor. Wow, this is one is really big!!! Villeneuve was playing a lot of electro house and then it was dj oliver who delivered the goods. I loved his set, he played the new remix of “pulverturm” (big one this year for sure), he dropped a remix of RHCP’s “by the way” (oh yes, the crowd loved it) and so on…lots of fun! We went back to the sunset terrace to catch the last few tracks of Jon Ulysses and see the matinee crew (ior-dee, j. louis, rebekah brown and the muscleboys) taking over control there. Babypink is this year’s colour of their shirts and I guess this new remix of Robert miles’ “children” (my god, what a classic, haven’t heard this for ages!) could be one of their signature tracks this summer for sabados por la mañana…lets see!
Back to the car park after a bit of matinee fun. Carl Cox had just arrived and also dropped a lot of electro house stuff, as well as a remix of “are you gonna go my way?” from lenny kravitz (but else I thought his set was very average tbh). Steve Lawler then closed the car park with one of the best deep techhouse set’s I’ve ever heard. GREAT! In between, we wandered back to the sunset terrace, just to see what Tom Novy is doing. He teased the crowd as always, by blending the best new upfront stuff together with the happiest classics…imo, he’s really the best one to close the sunset terrace.

On it went, off to the new terrace where deep dish were playing. Hm, this time they just didn’t do it for us, so we went inside (discoteca) where John Digweed was on. We stayed there and loved his proggy stuff, the inside there is perfect for this sound!

Short before 3am we called it a day, giving danny tenaglia (and cox’ second appearance) a miss. We were exhausted after dancing almost non-stop for 12 hours.
Conclusion – great opening! Of course, there were a lot of people, but as long as all the areas were open, you always found a place to dance. Only when the outdoor areas closed at midnight, it got really packed on the new terrace and in the discoteca! Softdrinks were 7€ so I guess they went up 1€ (last year it was 6€ during the season if I remember correctly).

Monday June 4th
DC10 Opening

The usual Monday madness? Well yes! We got there at about 3pm and went straight out on the terrace. It was already busy, but not yet packed (which we loved). Clive Henry was playing first. Then Argenis Brito were playing live and how amazing they were – that’s what I call funky techno!!! After them, it went on with Pedro, Matthias Tanzmann and then Josh Wink. Just when he began to play, there was a technical problem and therefore no sound for about 15mins on the terrace (with people still dancing to…what? Hehehe). But when the music was back, the Winker played an amazing set. As well did Tania Vulcano, who came afterwards. Actually, her set was possibly the most energetic set this day. Luciano closed the terrace, but we only stayed till about 11. So...to cut short the discussion about dc10 becoming sellout or whatever – I just don’t care. I had another brilliant time there, especially during the afternoon. By 6pm, it was already full and by 8pm it was unbelievably rammed there, so people continued dancing outside to the tunes of the terrace. Again, for everyone wanting to go to dc10 this summer, I’d definitely recommend going as early as possible. Just do 12 – 6 for example and enjoy!
One thing I’m not sure about is whether they already had put on glass windows in the open bit between the wall and the roof last year? Well anyway, now there definitely are windows (that can only be opened partially) and so the place gets VERY hot and steamy! Be prepared to get out there totally soaked…at least, to us it happened like that, maybe also because one of the big fans wasn’t working as well…

Monday June 4th
DC10 Aftershow at Privilege

Save the best for the rest? in a way, yes. First I wasn’t too sure If I would make it there, but after a shower and a snack and with knowing some friends will also be there, I went. The main floor and cocoloco were open. The latter got busy soon, for the mainfloor it took some more time. But hey, the minimal-techy tunes sounded G.R.E.A.T. in the mainroom, so much for the sound system! Again, I most liked josh wink’s set, he played the 4am-6am slot (he also played a tune digweed was dropping at space on Sunday, with some F1-sounds in the background…any ideas on that? Sounded amazing!). The crowd was really up for it and I also thought the ambiance was very good! at 7am, and just before sun was rising again, they stopped the music (back in cocoloco room at that point) and I finally had enough of partying for the moment.

cocoloco last night:

Today…well…feeling a bit tired of course, and my voice is almost gone, but else – I’m all good. There’s this Zenith party at Las Dalias which is going on since Midday but I really can’t be bothered to do this today…

FASHION
In the german forums, there was this discussion about this years fashion, so here’s what we noticed:
Girls: shorts (yes, very sexy, bring them on!!!!!), skirts, leggings (and everything combined), endless amounts of babydolls, much less boots than last year, this year’s all about wedges and ballerinas I think.
Boys: well…anything you want. The mullet trend finally seems to be over as well as the “L.A. cocaine business” shirts. All in all maybe a bit less freaky than last year? Ah maybe that’s only my impression for the moment…let’s see later in the season. For sunglasses, hats and everything else - go as you please!

GUARDIA CIVIL
In one word: everywhere. But as far as I know, this has always been the case for the openings, isn’t it? So the boys in gray really had a busy weekend, they were standing in front of privilege on both nights, they randomly searched people in front of space and did the same on the dusty fields around dc10.

see you soon! :D 8)

Thank you for your great review/pics. I can't wait until September!

BTW - are you sure the mullett thing is over? has anything even more hideous taken it's place (rat tail, mushroom, devil lock...)?
