Some of them looked incredible considering how old they were!

That man who emigrated to Australia looked so healthy, and so spritely, and respect to him for saying if he could live his life again, he wouldn't change a thing.

Gulf Wars?

WW2

let me rephrase this for you pedants!!!!

bearing in mind there are only 3 ww1 vets left, and in the next 10-15 the wwII vets will be dissapearing too, the oldest BRITISH vets will be those that saw action in the Falklands conflict

This thread has dwindled into utter drivel!

Personally I'm bored to tears with stuff about the WW. I have the utmost respect for the people that fought in these wars, but from growing up with family who have been in both of the great wars, it doesn't interest me watching it on the telly.

My grandad lay in a trench after his horse was gunned down for 2 weeks. Heard that story every day of my life for years. Cracking story but just wish he had the choice to fight!

What were we fighting for anyway?

well there was these austrians.....and they didnt particularly get on well with these serbs.....................

Did political geography at university. t's all about controlling the world.

Whoever controlled the seas and the motherland (Eurasia). Controlled the world!

Yes it is still a lot more complicated than that, but in essence it's all about territory, defining what that territory is and then controlling whatever lies within that territory.

Either way, it sickens me the amount of people that die in the world through violence.

It's a little more complicated, but it's actually got more to do with the balance of the "great powers".

The strongest countries at the time (Britain & France on one side, Germany, Austria-Hungary on the other, Russia wavering as usual but mainly with the UK-French axis) had a 5-nation balance of power thing going. Once war broke out, which threatened this balance, it was only a matter of time before everyone got pulled into it (the Russians had to pull out, of course, because of that little revolution). The Russians especially didn't like their little ethnic cousins, the Serbs, getting pounced on.

I also studied poli-sci in uni :D

Amazing programme, was it a repeat? I did a "Battlefields Trip" when I was a kid so have been to Ypres and surrounding areas. Tynecot is quite an humbling place...Thought provoking viewing.
