Introducing "The Evolution of Ibiza: Can the White Isle retain its legendary magic?"

This feature-length documentary looks back at the history of the island’s party scene from hippy hangout to becoming the world’s no. 1 clubbing destination, and asks, “how did it happen?”.

We talk to DJs, club promotors, officials and locals to discuss what Ibiza’s future could look like.

We hope you enjoy our journey exploring the evolution of Ibiza’s club scene.

Also one guy says money + table service not equals vip. Vip was likes of Freddie mercury etc. And ironically they would be on the dance floor not ringed off by "control" in special area all night.

For me the vibe 2010s where group of randoms meet up, pay €20-45 for club ticket at 1am and pile in for a good night. Carefully planning it like going to a music concert isn't that. But what many nights are becoming with epic production values.

It will all self correct eventually .

Having watched it in full, it was very much the cunts' banquet I feared, which did NOT present Ibiza INC. in a good light (esp compared to Berlin) whilst my interest in Norman Cook's opinions on anything hovers around zero. You cannot skim over serious social problems and then just move on to dwayne X or dwayne Y for 'expert' analysis. You need to be interviewing REAL people who actually know what they're talking about. This was ultimately an industry puff piece which was not hard-hitting at all and as such a wasted opportunity.

Thought it was a good watch , there was alot of trying to justify increased ticket and drinks prices etc due to making up for covid losses, but was also a few interesting points eg, these VIP areas wont exist for long if there's no one on the dancefloors, and some of the big names openly speaking about how expensive it is and the chance that they are pricing out the standard punter, and that all the big clubs are basically working together/having a truce.

Its impossible to compare Berlin to Ibiza. Totally different. Compare it to Munich or Stuttgart. Never seen a VIP Area in Berghain. And a Porsche means nothing to the bouncer ( ok , good way to be turned away , if they could see it ). These are exactly the people , they dont want. I saw 2 or 3 years ago : They didnt refuse at the entrance to so many people. Feeled less than the half.

Someone told me , in Ibiza in earlier days ( 30 years ago ) , they had a strict door policy in KU and El Divino. Is it true ?

I've never made any secret of the fact that it would my dream for Ibiza to be like Berlin - morally, creatively, musically - and I don't think it is impossible but the marketing has to change, the politics has to grow up and the mass tourism model has to end, but sadly none will happen any time soon

The real challenge as always is for creative, independent people to survive in an ecosystem that is so money-driven and which demands instant profits. I get the impression that there are people trying to do things differently eg at cova santa, but time will tell if they get eaten too

It was quite revealing in that programme that not one single person mentioned music at all, which was very revealing and depressing. But then again, it doesn't really affect me personally any more because ultimately you just move on

Cova Santa and Underground for example are small enough not to be eaten. If the success is too big , something will happen.

that Underground still survives is a miracle, no? do they turn much of a profit or have they got deep pockets?

Not really sure who owns it - there was some wrangling here back in 2006:

I've been speaking to friends who go to ibiza a lot, and pretty much all say the "vibe" has changed and the magic thatis ibiza has diminished.

This might be due to vip/phones/etc but was wondering is it because production is moving things more towards a concert type experience.

Eg : focus on the dj/front of the space etc.
So now it's more a 1 on 1 thing with a person watching something [optionally through their phone].

Less the old school thing of a group of people connecting in a space playing music with the occasional visual moment to kick things up a bit.

Maybe production needs to focus on more stuff in the crowd to get people interacting? (Loved old zoo project for that kind of thing)

Go out of the season. Totally different island. Totally different crowd. Beginn / middle of may was relaxed. Crowd was ok.
