Here goes, got back yesterday lunch-time so thought I’d try and get my thoughts down now while I can still remember them!
Friday 7th September
5 of us took off from Coventry at ten to midnight and landed in my favourite place in the world just after 3am. Got taxi’s to the hotel Tivoli where we were spending a few hours before moving into our villa on Saturday morning, the plan was to go straight to bed but we decided to go and see our friend at Koppi’s for a cheeky beer first – couldn’t resist!!
Saturday 8th September
Up and at em nice and early! Went to see my girlfriends old boss at Oasis for some breakfast and a couple of early drinks (this later proved to be not a very good idea) before picking up our hire cars, visiting Uno’s and setting off to our villa. The villa was wicked, 3 bedrooms, two bathrooms and good size kitchen and living area and a cracking pool surrounded by grass, sun lounges and a bbq!
Decided to crack open the booze from Uno’s before heading back to Playa Den Bossa for the England game – big mistake, I don’t remember the England game – not one bit! The photo’s proved that drinking from 11:00am in the sun leaves one a tad merry by 17:00 and hinders all football watching as well as holding a conversation.
Anyway after the game we visited our friends at Koppi’s again before waiting for my brother to arrive. Once Junior was on board we stocked up on alcohol (he was paying us for his visit to the villa in the only currency we thought best!) and headed back home (in taxi’s I might add). Once back we continued the party till the early hours, I do believe there is photographic evidence of 3 of us sporting different styles of boxing shorts from the hit films ‘Rocky’ whilst sporting very manly ‘we’re hard b******d’ poses! Off to bed!
Sunday 9th September
Here we started the day as we finished the previous evening and due this my memory of the day goes like this: open can, already drunk, have tomfoolery around the pool, get pushed in but manage not to spill a sing drop of beloved Strongbow, go back to bed! Great days!!
Got back up around 8ish, cleaned up and went to La Brassa for tea, a nice restaurant and a wonderful setting. The food was good but not a nice as I expected from reading others reviews, 6 of us had starters and mains (why do I always order something and then wish I had something else in this case I wanted to swap my steak for my buddy’s rabbit), a few bottles and wine, beer and water and we coughed up 60 euros’ each. Next we had a couple of drinks before heading home for sleep.
Monday 10th September
Got up and had to be convinced it was Monday as apart from the meal I couldn’t remember the day before. Gutted to be honest, I was stupid enough to waste e a day like this, plus I was rough as a badgers behind too! Anyway, off to Playa Den Bossa to get Cocoon tickets, an easy task by anyone’s means! As I walked in to the shop I noticed a Carl Cox poster, the big mans frame stuck in my mind I promptly walked on in and ordered 6 tickets for Carl Cox – the wrong night! The only thing that saved me from a thoroughly good thrashing from the boys was our plans to actually go to Space the next night! We searched around looking for Cocoon tickets a while longer (couldn’t go back to Beeswax to due feeling a tad silly) but was told to come back later!
Got back to the villa and took some serious ribbing from the lads and decided I could face no more and went for a snooze. Woke up feeling refreshed and decided to join the lads in the sun where we enjoyed a spectacular game of footy in the garden where I resembled a mix of Ian Rush and King Kenny in there prime while the rest of the boys were more Derby County!
Visited the Italian Restaurant in Es Cubells (can’t remember the name), the food was really good and not expensive. Went back to Bossa and got the right tickets before heading home to get spruced up for uncle Sven.
Bit of a disappointing night really, got there at 1ish and the music was sound on the terrace was good, moved on to the main room at 2 and apart from being rammed I just the found that the music didn’t go anywhere – I kept expecting it to kick off and it didn’t, maybe I should have investigated the music better beforehand but it just wasn’t for me. Sven came on at 3ish and it got a wee bit better but then just stayed there again so me and the boys found a bit of space near one of the bars and made our own fun!! Left about half 5 and tucked up in bed for half 7!
Tuesday 11 September
Felt like poo! Still managed to get round the pool for 12 though and was kind of glad it wasn’t baking hot for a change, perked up a bit and went for food at Bar Lumbi Grill in Es Cubells to be treated to the greatest customer service/comedy genius the island has to offer! We had visited here a couple of times last year and one of the owner, Jose is one of the nicest guys around, he is also as mentioned above a comedy genius that raised the spirits of 6 rough looking lads from the Midlands when nothing else at the time could.
Got back and enjoyed more chill time before getting ready for Carl Cox (no running around for tickets now!). Got to Boss early so we could see the big man on the terrace but to honest 2 of us were feeling so bad we were seriously just going to go home, rough is not the word for it! It tuck us an hour to stomach a KFC (what a hearty meal to go clubbing on!) and when that resurfaced some time soon after our only thoughts were ‘good night one and all’, anyhow we managed to drag our sorry asses down to Space and I am so glad we did, we chilled for the first hour watching Carl Cox from the safety of the back of the terrace and then chilled up stairs for a bit longer, by about half 12 we were feeling loads better and ventured on down. First we hit the terrace because my bro’s a DnB nut and Marky was on. Whoever would have thought drum and bass would give me a pick me up! It was great, I’m not really a fan of drum and bass, I usually only use it on my Ipod for the gym but his set was wicked, really fun and uplifting and the energy he showed behind the decks had everyone else up on there feet. Left that room after an hour cos one of the group couldn’t get into it and went to see Laurent Garnier (my reason for attending) – brilliant, simply brilliant, a faultless set and cracking tunes! The room was busy but again we managed to find a bit of space at the back for some shape throwing! Carl Cox came on just after 3 (I think) and we stayed till about half 4 ish, would have liked to have stayed longer but the already broken body was about to shut down completely so back to the villa for us! In bed for 6 and truly glad we fought off the demons and made the effort to go!
Wednesday 12th September
Opened my eyes and was ready for the world of pain that I truly deserved! What was this though, a little tired – check, a little fuzzy – check, apart from that feeling tickety boo and can see the sun shine outside – check! Brilliant, felt not bad and the weather had picked up, cue lying about the pool all day waxing lyrical about Carl Cox, Laurent Garnier and Marky, a few cheeky shandy’s and another visit to Jose! Good times.
The plan was to go and have a quiet night in Bossa and catch the England game so off we went to say hello to Dom at the Sports Café, one of our party however decided that this was his night for mischief and had a right good old knees-up (on his own) which reminded me that when you’re drunk you really do think you’re a lot funnier and better looking than you actually are! Being the good buds that we are we encouraged him and told him that ‘no, he didn’t look waster and yes maybe another brewski was in order’! Went to say hello to my former employees Frank and Carol at The 3 Monkeys below the Bon Sol, 2 nicer people you’ll never meet but unfortunately the place fails to attract any real customers as its a little like Phoenix Nights in the sun. Finished the night at Koppi’s again where the drunkest member of the gang had his tadger grabbed by the bar maid once she’s heard the legend that is his penis! Cue more laughter and tears rolling down cheeks – our poor mate (the incredibly drunk one by the way) didn’t know what to do (he’s very very shy with women by the way), other than jump in a taxi with us for the journey home and promptly throw up on arrival at the villa! An early night, no, a funny night, yes!
Thursday 13th September
Beach day – yes, we were finally all going to be up early enough and well enough for some sun, sand and sea action, needless to say it was cloudy mother of a day! Hey how, off we went to Cala Vadella anyway and made the most of it, had a cracking meal at a restaurant that I now can’t remember the name of,aaahhhhh! It’s the second one you come to once you’ve parked up and come on to the beach properly, after the place that pretty much looks like a sandwich shop? Anyway the food and service was great, I recommend the Monk Fish in green pepper sauce, my mate had the lamb and that looked sweet too!
Got back to the villa and got ready for our night at F*** Me I’m Famous, was looking forward to seeing Axwell and more so to the food at the Pacha restaurant beforehand! I think eating here really makes the night! Again the service was really good, we ate there last year and wasn’t sure how 6 English lads in the 20’s would be treated as it’s fair to say that some of the bar staff look like you’ve just peed up there legs rather than politely asked for a refreshing beverage! But we couldn’t complain, this time there were 5 of us as my brother had to go home the night before (gutted), again we all had starters and main courses (this time I was jealous of no man’s food – Ox steak with fois and Peaches since you asked!), a few bottles of water, wine and beer and then finished off with some cocktails, it cam to about 80 euros a head with a generous tip and considering it was 50 euros’ a ticket I think this was money well spent! The night itself was a bit of a mix, I thought Axwell was great, really good set and got the crowd going. Guetta (spl?) however was lame, over here he would DJ in a towny bar like Yates’ – big hit after big hit after big hit, does he not understand about building the crowd and working people up and teasing people?? I heard him at Space last year and whilst he played some favourites it wasn’t the same shameful crowd pleasing record plugging performance as this! We listened to him for an hour and then did one and then carried on the party till about 8ish. Still a good night all in all.
Friday 14th September
Another chill day today, again the weather was really poor so it limited up as to what we could do, so much that I can’t actually remember what we did, I imagine it was a long the lines of a few beers and some food (thank god you’re thinking, a much shorter review of the day!).
Should have gone for dinner at Blue Marlin at night but the weather got so bad it ripped the umbrella’s out of the ground at the villa so I had a moment of genius and recalled a few people on here mentioning a tapas bar in San Jose, although the actual name I couldn’t recall it was enough to remember it was Destino on walking past! What a great place to go and eat, we arrived just after 9 and they couldn’t fit us in until 10:20 but that wasn’t a problem, thought the service was superb and loved the way they talked you through and explained all of the different dishes, choosing what to have (and remembering half of them) was a nightmare and as expected everyone’s eyes were bigger than there bellys, but every dish was great, you really couldn’t fault one – needless to say the group fell in love with the place. We all agreed that there was no way any desert was needed until we were confronted by about a dozen of the greatest selection of cakes, pastry’s and mouse’s you could imagine, we’ll take 6 please!! It was worth that feeling of ‘oh s**t, my sides are gonna burst’ because once again they were all great! Was a good tip left – you’re not wrong! Home and an early night as tomorrow would be a long day!
Saturday 15th September
Why would anyone spend a lovely week in a villa and then decide to leave it for 2 days in San Antonio you ask? Well, I really have no f*****g idea other than we just always find our way there every year and this year was no different! You just have to take it all with a pinch of salt! Me and another member of the group have been going to Ibiza since 1996, and back then we were those horrible little drunken kids that I know look down on so maybe it’s too reminisce, I’m not sure. In fact I don’t look down on them, I wouldn’t want to spend a whole holiday there but for a lot of them it’s there first time away from home and they know no better. We spent the first four years staying in San Antonio, each year braving it a little further away from its clutches searching for new places on the island to party (and avoid a fight which by the way we have never been involved in or even witnessed)! Eventually working out there and holidaying in Figurettas, Playa Den Bossa and now in Villas but we always have to pay it a visit just to see if or how’s changing, so we picked up and moved ourselves into the 17-20 year old paradise that is the Club Paraiso Apartments. They were clean and tidy, had a few bars and places to eat and even an on site supermarket – bonza! They also had a DJ (in the loosest term) who played bloody hard house all day from 10 in the morning, aaahhhhhh, it burns crusty it burns!
We spent the day watching the footy (I still think Liverpool should have started Stevie G) and then sun bathing around the quiet pool (thank goodness for that bad boy) before getting ready for the sunset – nice night, very clear and Tijuana! It’s always a delight to go and see Tony (and not just for the obscene amount of free tequila he throws at you) and have a bite to eat ready for the carnage to come! For old times sake we started in the hip establishment ‘Tropicana’s’, the bar here is full of traditional neon lights and cheap lady’s, it can hold maybe 50-60 people but since 30-40 of these were burly men on a stag do we mossied on over the road to the equally cool ‘Capone’s’ for some classic RnB – coolio! Then it was off to Hush which isn’t a bad little bar and the crowds a lot different to the main strip! We couldn’t however resist a trip to the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s bar, mainly cos one the props has been working there since I was there in 2000 at least (what a tremendous servant) – I’m not sure if it was so funny it was brilliant or so bad I wanted to cry, either way there were tears in my eyes so we all went back to finish the night at Hush before getting in at half 5! Here was witnessed some serious brutality, we were having one last brewski on the balcony and some lads getting back decided to have a dip in the pool, all of them got out just as security cam round the corner, they asked the remaining lad to get out of the pool and he did, straight away without mucking about or giving them lip, the minute he was out he got a mass crack around the head by one of the security guards with his night stick, how he stayed upright or even managed to walk off I don’t know, but it was really hard to watch and unnecessary! I imagine the security guards have to put up with loads of crap on a daily basis by idiots (and believe me we witnessed some real scum dogs in the hotel) but there was no need!
Sunday 16th September
Up at 10 thanks to banging hard house beats outside our window, you can only begin to imagine how much this hurts after just a few hours sleep! Washed face, brushed teeth, grabbed bag, towel, sun cream and wallet and got the f**k out of there and straight to the quiet pool for tea and beans on toast and another hours kip!
The sun was out today so bonza, everyone was in no mood for anything after we proved the night before that we are too old for the west end so it was just catching some rays and drifting in and out of consciousness for us!
Had some sunset action again (cloudy this time) and went to Sa Capella for our last meal! Love this place, again the setting and service is great, had Ibiza prawns baked in salt followed by fillet steak in apple and wild mushroom sauce – try both of these if you get the chance, my mate had broccoli, fried with ham and cheese (I think) too and again this was to die for. We finished up, had one last drink in Bar M and a little stroll and then back to bed for 2 ish as we had to leave the next day – gutted!
Monday 17th September
Up at half 7, out of the room at 8:15, in airport at 9:15, duty-free, s**test hotdog in the world, on plane landed at East Midlands at 11:45 yesterday!
Sorry for the long review, hopefully you won’t be as p****d off reading it at my boss would be if he knew as was writing it whilst ‘working from home’! Had another cracking year, got goose bumps now writing this and I do believe in a tear in my eye!
How come you can go anywhere else in the world, have a brilliant time and when you leave it’s just the end of the holiday yet you go to Ibiza (maybe for the first time maybe for the fifteenth) and you know full well you’ll see the place again in a years time and it really does make you so sad? Answers on a post card please!
