Suggestions for Sunday nights - house / trance

As the title says :)

Unfortunately I'm only in Ibiza for one night and looking for a proper all-night balls to the wall hard house / trance party with real club-kids :) I've had a browse of the big-name clubs but their Sunday parties seem a little more disco-ey / garage-ey / vocal-house-y.

Hard house has been dead for 20 years, Trance is almost completely dead. There is only one trance night in Ibiza and it's perhaps in its final year as it really only attracts people over 35 and isn't a very popular draw. You could try the Tidy Weekender at Pontins. They will still be putting a banging donk on it in 2042.

Thanks :) To be honest, I'm not really that clue'd up on genres ... I just know if I like it / don't like it. What should I be looking for if I "used to" like house / trance when that was still a thing? Like what they used to play at Amnesia, for example. The kind of music that Oakenfold, Tiesto, Paul van Dyk used to play ... I know I'm aging myself a bit here ... be kind ;-)

I think your choice is (there are others, but I think these might suit you):

- Solomun at Pacha. It will be slower than you are used to but he's very popular and will play trancy/arpy stuff for the last few hours (there really isn't much 135bpm stuff still around, music has slowed down a lot in the past decade or so.)

- Pyramid at Amnesia. Music depends on the lineup, but there will likely be some good techno if you want something a bit harder and darker than Solomun. Likely someone like Amelie Lens in the second room.

I always go to Solomun on Sundays.

Also, because I am feeling kind, here is your lowdown on popular contemporary genres (it's still broadly house and techno as it has been for years):

Tech-house (used to be decent, is now bland, popular amongst the yout dem, not posting any cos I have no clue)
Deep-tech/minimal house
Progressive house
Indie dance
Melodic house/Melodic techno (hard to say where these cross over into each other)
Afro/organic/downtempo house
'Warehouse' (pejoratively called 'business') techno

Obvs there are loads of other things, but maybe this will help get you started?

Are you sure the kind of bland and generic Tech-house is actually popular amongst the youth? Or do they simply go to clubs not because of who's/what's playing but because that's where it's happening? IMO the youth, just like 20 years ago, have vastly differentiated music tastes, but have to accept what's on offer if they want to go clubbing.

(Anecdotal evidence from number of views on Youtube indicate that melodic trance/house is the more popular alternative in this genre).

My unpopular opinion is that 80% of people visiting clubs on Ibiza have no strong connection or liking of the music being played. What we are seeing is a downdumbing to find a style or sound that doesn't put too many people off, but also satisfies enough people to fill the club. It's like McDonalds and Facebook, and most other industries that cater to the largest possible audience. They need to find a common but necessarily somewhat bland denominator to attract enough people. What we get is not many people totally satisified. Most are meh.

Quite a few clubs on Ibiza might be running on the fumes of a past era where the music was more distinct and had actual cred. Sooner or later there might be a shift in the market with smaller clubs specialising in distinct and hard-core styles.

You could well be right.

Trance indeed is slim pickings, and outside of dedicated weekenders, Hard House even more scarce. But if you can compromise on sound, then "club-kids" is going to be most catered for at Glitterbox. It wont be exactly what you're looking for, but it'll be a clubbing experience you'll remember I'm sure. Always a lot of fun, even if it maybe succumbs to cheesiness sometimes. Lots of characters for sure and proper "Ibiza" production

There seems to be something quite interesting going on at Tox (the club under Destino) this summer in terms of trance on the island - Marcus Schulz has a residency there on Tuesdays from the end of June, and they’ve got a one-off with Paul Oakenfold in mid-June too. Might be setting up as a mini trance stronghold in Ibiza?

To answer your question though, as others have said above, Solomun+1 is your best bet on a Sunday. The last few hours are trancey and he is just a brilliant DJ. 😎
