Staying in Ibiza town & Renting a Car, bad idea?

As I've been reading, parking the care doesn't seem like the ideal use of time in Ibiza Town, but when finding out how cheap it is to rent a car on Ibiza, it's hard to resist...

Is the situation that bad? How expensive/far out is the car park from the port?

well you'll have to search a bit for a spot to put your car, but having a car is still an essential IMO.

Whenever I stay in Ibiza town I just park at El Corso at Marina Botafoch and get the water taxi over. Beats doing 10 laps of Vara de Ray and it's a lovely trip across!

Hey Stivi.

Just wanted your advice on parking fines.

We got one whilst parking in Formentera. We parked in the same spot the day before and no issues. It was one of them blue bays. There was no signs to say about paying information.

It is not issued by the police but rather by some sort of supposed isle of Formentera council??? Maybe just made up piece of paper.

My wife is Spanish is telling me that having read the internet it is not legally binding etc.

Do you have any experience on such matters?

hmmmm not sure myself tbh. I always pay any fines I get (not that I get many) but this is obviously because I live here.

My initial thought was to pay it. But my wife is pretty insistant that it is not legal.

We see what happens. she is pretty good at arguing her case.

I saw those little paper tickets being given out down an Ibiza back street! Look more like bus tickets than fines!!

As for hiring a car - not for me. Even in the off-season how much of valuable holiday time would be taken out trying to park? The buses take you almost everywhere and the timetables are on the web (and clear enough) + ferry boats running up and down the coast.

Point for debate, rather that a "tourist tax" I feel there should be a car tax instead to try to cut down on the amount of cars on the island.

I think they just need to limit the amount of hire cars available. Would probably push costs up but in peak season probably worth it.

The only time I've ever got stressed about parking is in Figueretas. If im in Ibiza town i just park in the paid car park. Other places i tend to have a look on google maps before i go. But i wouldn't let parking put you off getting a car. Buses get you around but a car gives you real freedom to explore. Definite essential for me.

If Im staying in the town I always park on the other side of the tunnel that runs from ibiza town to Figs. Its a local street or a rough track and its only two mins from the centre.

Streets are Carrer de Ramon Munter or Carrer Luci Oculaci, never had a problem parking here even in peak season.

For me a car is a must:)

Any thing in the local papers about 2 fcked up dutch guys that were caught drink driving on Saturday night.

Free parking on the hilly road behind vara de rey. Though i can't say i was ever especially bothered about some fine winging its way to an ancient address in Catford via Interpol
