Spanish Lessons

We've just moved to Ibiza and are trying really hard to learn the language - Spanish that is, we're not ready for Catalan yet! We are using Michel Thomas and his CDs along with trial and error in shops and bars at the moment but it is a really slow process.

Does anybody know any good language schools on Ibiza or if the colleges here run Spanish lessons for foreigners?

Thanks in advance for your help.

i teach english in one. we run courses throughout the year in spanish for foreigners at all levels.

do you want our details??

Looks like you have the Jackpot with that reply from Stephen.

May I ask what you do out there / how you plan to make your living ? . .

I'm not being nosey, its just that we are mulling over the possibilty of scarpering out to Ibiza and I am always interested on other peoples experiences , what they found tough about the move etc . .

Hi Stephen thanks for this.....

Yes please send details, much appreciated. Terrier is right I have hit the jackpot and within minutes of asking the question too!

Terrier,

That is a good question.... we came over earlier in the year and arranged to rent an apartment from the begining of June. We paid a year in advance because our German landlord doesn't trust the British. The good thing that came out of this is that we don't have to worry about acommodation for the next year. We owned a flat in Maida Vale (London) and we sold it in July pocketing a reasonable profit which we hoped would go some way to buying into a business here. We planned to use ten grand of it to last us for the next year. However, when my wife gave her notice in, her boss asked her if she'd be prepared to work part time from Ibiza on a reduced salary. Consequently we don't have to touch any of our house money although we are living on a tight budget.

Although we've hit the ground running, my wife's company is going through changes and we expect that her job will go completely by the end of the end of the year and we'll have to find some other form of income. We've only been here a few weeks and already we can see that the opportunites that seemed limitless in April are not so great. We'd looked into buying a bar back then but I can't believe how quiet Ibiza is at the moment. We were in Ibiza town on Sunday night at around midnight and we were the only customers in Base while Rock (next door) was empty - hardly the mad frenetic pace that we'd hoped for. But then considering the prices that they charge maybe they are getting their come uppance!

A lot of the bar and restaurant owners that we have spoken to are complaining of low levels of custom this season and that is bound to affect all other types of businesses. So, we are spending our time looking around and hoping that something will come to us, not an exact science but all that we can come up with at the moment. Fortunately we aren't tied to anything in the UK and so if things don't work out here we can head to the mainland. We both love it on the island though and we'll do all that we can to make sure that we can stay here. One thing is for sure there is no way that we are going back to the UK!

first i would mull over why you love to come to ibiza.

if the answer includes space, bora bora etc etc then mull over what you're going to do for the other 40 weeks a year when ibiza becomes a country village - difficult to get to or from, with very little to do, and the weather isn't so hot.

and then consider that accommodation in ibiza is as expensive as barcelona and madrid.

i love it by the way and have never once regretted moving here but i think you need to consider the above points when relocating.

Very interesting thread. I have always thought that one day I might like to move to Ibiza but as Stephen says Im sure people are blinkered by the fact that from October to April/May Ibiza is really really quiet.

I may still one day consider the move but for the moment I am happy in London trying to make my millions!!

Casper, can I ask what kind of age group you are in? Im 27yo and wouldnt consider moving for a good while yet.

I too am trying Michel Thomas but when I got there I was continually told it was ok but not quite right eg everyone = todos el mondo but I was corrected to todos el gente - same difference but NOT - arghhhhhhhhhhh

in my opinion you can't beat a good teacher - it's against the law!

our academy does actually have some quite famous old boys...

our very own stingray spent some time studying spanish there about 5 years ago.

top 80's popster and radio DJ Andy Wilson probably speaks better spanish than mackie now, the amount of time he's been studying.

and top local jock DJ Reche once spent 90 minutes at the feet of the master (me) studying english and obviously decided that it was enough - he never came back.

how about that then?

i live in maida vale & produce house music/dj outside of normal work. my flat mate/co producer keeps talking about a permanent move to ibiza & ft music making. whilst i would love 2, i can't see it being practical.

gonna start learning spanish over here just in case...

Thanks for your help guys and especially thanks to Stephen who sent me details of his college. We both said when we started this that whatever else happens we are going to end up speaking Spanish.

To answer Spunkymonkey's question we are in the 30 - 40 age range. We both love a good night out in a club but that isn't why we are here, we're here because it's a beautiful cosmopolitan place with fantastic weather and an easy going pace. A place where you can have peace and quiet or travel a little way down the road and have an absolutely mental night out cheaply. If we were in our twenties there is no way in a million years that we would have left London which I still think is one of the most amazing cities in the world.
