Sounds like they couldn't afford to maintaine the fleet to a safe standard so shutting up shop can only be a good thing for the passengers :?

Thank you so much for posting this as we had flights booked with Spanair from Ibiza to Barcelona next month and hadn't heard the news. Just booked with Vueling in case, and hope that we will be refunded eventually by Spanair as there has been no word from them. If there are alternative flights put on we will only have lost 20 euros each for the Vueling flights. The only disappointment is that we had planned more or less a whole day in Barcelona but now we will get there late in the evening but still in plenty of time for a nice meal if nothing else. Good excuse to repeat the trip next winter!
:)

It'll make getting to Ibiza a little more interesting from the US, at least for those of us flying US Airways/United/Continental. There were only two Star Alliance airlines flying to Ibiza, Spanair which just shut down and BMI which is being sold to BA and thus is likely leaving the Alliance. Plus BMI was only seasonal charter service anyways, and flying to the UK to connect to Ibiza doesn't make the most sense. :)

Can still fly into Spain and buy a separate ticket for the Ibiza flight, but it means if anything goes wrong with flight delays/cancellations or bags going missing life could start to suck.

Does hit Newark and other airports a bit that !! Probably a non-stop to Barcelona or something if you can plus a separate ticket from the many flights per day on to Ibiza from there would make most sense.

Even travelling to/from UK I sometimes end up with separate tickets via mainland Spain .. when airlines start wanting $500 (even saw over $1,000 on BA last year) one way to London from Ibiza you start compromising !

i've had flights on Delta that connected to Spanair into Ibiza and they checked our luggage all the way through from LAX - IBZ... I wonder now if they will try to work with Iberia or just no longer offer flights that can connect into Ibiza.

This could cause a lot of travel problems if you take away one of the biggest providers of daily flights into Ibiza.

just did some googling and it appears that Iberia is going to add a few flights into Ibiza which should help.
