*soundcloud restrictions*

Please note than certain record labels (strictly/defected) are exerting pressure on soundcloud to take down mixes hosting tracks from their catalogues. Soundcloud is technically classified as a podcast and therefore subject to licensing PRS requirements. Mixes are monitored using computer algorithm software which automatically detects tunes so simply removing tracklistings is irrelevant. People who contravene rules get a warning email but my understanding is that only the first track on the mix is currently being scanned so it seems that the way to get round the restrictions for now is to start a mix with an obscurity which won't be picked up. There has been a lot of noise about this recently but there is still some uncertainty about what will happen next but it seems you will have to be quite careful from now on about what you include. Some people have started switching to mixcloud which is fully licensed, however, there is no downloadable option of any kind there yet....

It says a lot about a label if they are wanting to pull people up for playing their music.

I know that almost all vinyl I have (obviously white labels excluded) says that its not for public performance, but that is what the music is made for is it not?

Producers, especially in the dance scene, make tracks to be played in clubs by DJ's. People who put these tracks in their mixes are basically advertising the tracks to others. Surely thats no bad thing?

first time i hear about this...i really don't understand this kind of behaviour by the labels...

this is promotion for them, for the artist, generally for everyone who is involved...i really can't see how they're losing money from this...

I guess they'll claim that if you can download a mix that mainly constitutes from their tunes, you won't find it necessary to buy their compilation of the same tracks.
