Ibiza gigs report (warning - a bit geeky in places)

OK, just back from Ibiza. Had two gigs at The Orange Corner beach bar and a guest slot elsewhere that, due to unforseen circumstances, didn't materialise.

Note - Soulman is only used for internet purposes, never for DJing.
Went under the name/phrase "There's A Mouse In The House. eek!" yeah! really!

Thursday afternoon ambient House & Latin chillout session

I spent all day in my hotel room on Wednesday sorting my playlist into a specific running order as I wanted to put it together harmonically. Thursday morning I decided to beatgrid the list as I don't normally beatgrid my tracks. This means that two tunes beatgridded can be 'locked' together for the duration of the tunes. First tune was Roy Ayers - Tarzan (Tamith 2007 remix) from the 2006 WMC 12" Vinyl set. I remixed it on my laptop with headphones on the flight to Ibiza!

At the gig itself there was a problem. The bar has a main road running along one side of it, normally there is a glass partition to cut the traffic noise down. However, as the bar had only recently opened for the season, there was no glass partition. I had trouble EQing 'cos I couldn't hear my mixing when a bus or lorry passed by at the wrong time. I eventually adapted to just listening to the mix in the headphones when vehicles were passing, still not ideal. On playback the first few mixes are not as good as I would like.

I got a great reaction from everyone to what I was doing, especially the Spanish bar staff and owners. They said it was great to have a proper chillout session on an afternoon (and they loved the Latin) as most DJs have it banging. One of the customers came to me after an hour or so and said this was what he had been waiting all season for, a proper chillout session Ibiza style. Wow! Great compliment. :D He and a couple of others were asking for CDs, I said it's been recorded and will be available later. He stayed for the full 5 hours and said he enjoyed every minute. There wasn't the number of customers I would have liked in the bar, however, there were plenty on the beach just outside listening. 8)

The resident DJ/Promoter Robin, who has been working at Coastline for the last few years, was very impressed. He said he had not seen laptop DJing done in a professional manner like that before, and was very impressed with the music choice too. :D

Saturday Night banging Electro and Tech House

Spent Saturday morning in my hotel room gathering together tunes for a playlist. Eventually ended up with 8 hours of tunes for a 4 hour set. Decided I didn't have time to beatgrid them, I would just beatmix as I normally do, riding the pitchbend to keep them inline as we used to do with vinyl. On approaching the bar from the Egg, I heard a "thump thump" of bass going on. I assumed it to be Bar M, to my suprise it was a DJ in The Orange Corner. Robin also arrived at the same time and turned it down immediately and pointed out the notice in big letters just behind the mixer. It read "No more than two red lights maximum for main output!". This kid had it off the scale! After I took over and he left, Robin said that this kid had sent in a mediocre CD but was not given a DJ slot, he just turned up when no-one was there and started playing without permission! Cheeky bugger!

The bar was almost empty when I took over from the kid at 9pm at the proper volume, Within an hour the bar was full. Had dancers, people whistling, etc. great fun. Non of the tunes were pre-selected, I was "flying by the seat of my pants" as it were. I was also mixing harmonically 'on the fly'. Been getting into this harmonic mixing recently. Most of my tunes have been analysed and have the key they are in displayed. I have the Camelot mixwheel as my desktop display, just minimise Traktor to read the wheel, then maximise Traktor to select the next tune. Worked great! Jez from Spotlight showed up and introduced himself, thanks for the support Jez. :D

Oh, noticed they had put the glass in the partition between the bar and the main road, was so much better for mixing. :D

Again had 5 or 6 different people come up asking if I had any CDs for sale, bugger, could have made a fortune! Went for a drink afterwards with Robin who has told me he was so impressed he is reserving slots in September for return gigs for me. Note to self "Must take along CDs to sell". ;)

Even on holiday I much prefer being behind the decks, I had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed myself. :D

Hmmmm, should I advertise myself as a resident of The Orange Corner, Ibiza? :p
