sharks and other creatures

I just finished watching a show about Shark attacks in Florida and Australia. I was wondering if there are any sharks in the Med? I have been in the water swimming in the middle of the sea off of a boat, and at Salinas, PDB, and Cala Basa. Are there sharks or any other creature to worry about? I know when I was at Atlantis a friend got stung by a Medusa, and another stepped on an urchin. That make me get out of the water fast!

 8O OMG but there really is:
Even the slightest hint of a shark attack in the Mediterranean surprises - even horrifies - the many millions of people who visit this region every year. From a biological and historical aspect, the fact that sharks in the region bite at an almost abnormal minimum frequency of only 0.42 cases annually should not surprise anyone. The only surprise is the low frequency of attacks.

The existence of approximately 46 different species of sharks in the Mediterranean - 16 of them measuring three or more meters in length, and 15 being potentially dangerous species - makes the occasional encounter between humans and these animals in the most frequented and most travelled sea unavoidable. Although the Mediterranean barely makes up 0.7% of the world's total water surface, the amount of people seeking rest and relaxation there, in addition to those seeking to make a living, is enormous and in no way compares to its relative geographical surface area.

ibizaboi - i hope that we've reassured you by providing you with these answers

thanks for the info! I'm definately still dipping in the sea. Just was very curious. At least in the med it is mostly clear and you could see them coming at you (unlike the murky waters of the Atlantic). I'll just watch out for the Medusa at Atlantis!

What happened to your friend who stepped on the urchin? I was stung on the hand by a medusa at Es Cavallet - it felt like an electric shock at first, then the affected half of my hand was numb and I couldn't move it for a few minutes.

The only sharks you need to worry about in the mediterrean are the ones selling tickets to the clubs. :?

Blasted medusa - I always buy a kids fishing net and become the local hero fishing hundreds out onto the beach in a morning or afternoon session - the kids love helping.

We were on a boat with Captn Ritchie. I think he had some cream to put on it. somone mentioned peeing on it at the time. That was either for the urchin or Medusa. I think after a few beers on the boat and some sangria at Kumharas it was fine!8)

Sharks ? Medusas ? 8O 8O 8O

Did they attack blond and blue eyes women too ??????
I've heard that they are especially attracted to bright light colors like blonde hair and blue eyes  ;)

Anyone see that episode of friends with Monica's jellyfish sting? classic

Sharks are fine! Nothing to worry about there...

I've been diving and swam past loads of sharks...if you leave them alone then they could give 2 sh*ts about you!
I've even taken piccies of them with an underwater camera.

This shark attack stuff is mostly an overhyped myth in a similar way to ecstasy deaths were/are. ;)
