Scientology Madness!

yep I shall definitely be watching that tonight - scientologists are a very funny bunch of people.

I once did their 'stress test' because I needed to use their loo

Whatever you think of the Scientologists, John Sweeney is a jerk of the highest degree, so I doubt his reporting is anywhere near objective.

I haven't looked at the links above, but I read that at some point he went ballistic and freaked out about the Scientologists on camera. They're apparently including his tirade in the program

Did anyone watch Panorama? How was it?

The Scientologists put out their own documentary with their version of events, which can be viewed online (www.bbcpanorama-exposed.org) . It's actually quite entertaining. While you've got to take most of what they say with a bucket of salt, they do have film of Sweeney staging several parts of his show.

I hate this kind of journalism... he'd already made up his mind about who/what Scientology is so that's what he set out to show. I happen to agree with his position, but nevertheless I deplore that kind of unbalanced reporting.

Fair point, but when you are deliberately being obstructed as he was isnt it a bit hard to report on any other side? I'll watch their version of events when i get in though.

i missed most of this show last night but saw the screaming episode at the end. Apparently panorama only aired that because it was already on youtube. I dont have much respect for journalists who act like that regardless of how they have been treated, it isnt professional.

I'm sure he was obstructed in some ways, but the Scientologists had film of him showing up at various locations at random times demanding to be let in or to meet with certain people.

That's just theater on Sweeney's part... in any situation like that you'd make arrangements. Then he films himself walking in and out of the building several times to get a good take

The Scientologists then showed their own people randomly trying to visit the Archbishop of Canterbury unnanounced and being turned away. Fair point!

Again, take it with a truckload of salt, but the Scientologists claim that they offered tours of all their facilities, meetings, etc., and Sweeney was always turning them down. He got a tour of one facility, and then showed back up there again banging on a back door and filmed no one answering

Sweeney didn't dispute any of this in his online rebuttal to the MySpace posting.... at least, he hasn't yet.

It was all very pointless. I agree he isn't a very good reporter. Watching him lose his rag was indeed very entertaining. Although it was hard not to with that obnoxious fool he was trying to interview.

his lost his rag big time!8O 8O

but the guy from scientology was even worse. a total d!ck - bullying, manipulating, coercing, patronising, couldn't be reasoned with.

didn't see it all but the holocaust thing looked shocking.

He was a weasel of the biggest kind. I hated him, he didn't listen to a word John Sweeney was saying

live and let live

I think they were trying to wind up sweeny and they succeeded. A reporter should not lose his cool or professionalism. If it was me I don't think I would have remained calm if someone was shouting at me and trying just to get their point across; but I'm not a reporter. I think to each his own but IMO scientology is a bit off the reservation. I think if what you profess to be your religion it should be able to stand up to investatgation. Did the reporter have an agenda maybe I could not read his mind.
