Schoolboy style DJing question!

When somebody refers to a DJ's set as being 'technically flawless', what the fook does this mean?

:?: :?

usually that their mixing is perfect throughout, i.e no noticeable mistakes.

I thought that might be the case, but wouldn't it go without saying that an A list DJ would be 'technically flawless' every time he played out? :?:

Unfortuntely not !
Especially not from the older dj's !

(Pete Tong, Jeff Mills etc are legendary for awful mixing !)

being technically flawless wont make your set interesting though. There is so much software out now, you dont even have to know how to beatmatch.

not everyone uses computers to mix with ;) :)

I agree with James, if you're getting paid a couple of K per set, surely you should be giving a top notch performance every time!?

That above statment was good ! :) i love mixing live on my while recording and then listening to my own sets later that day .

that would be such an impossible expectation 2 put on ANY DJ "every single time" he (or she) played out....

i dunno i expect the DJ (regardless of what they are getting paid) 2b putting in 110% (all the time) but no one can be "technically flawless" EVERY single time they play....
some get very close but no way "all the time"....
they are human & they make mistakes....
it's the way of the world.... ;)

Agree on all points.

I have had this arguement before - u cant expect everyone to be flawless all the time but you would expect a 'big name' DJ to at least be able to mix.

And remember - if you dont DJ chances are unless the DJ got it REALLY wrong you wont notice something that to them is a mistake.

Agreed, I know a lot of dj's who'll finish a set and say it was "scrappy" but on the dancefloor it sounded perfect. You can get away with a lot more live.

Sometimes it's like any other job, you can have a bad night where things don't quite go too well.

This is so true. Before I DJ'd I would never have picked up on half the mistakes other DJ's make. Just goes to show how important tune selection is and not necessarily being flawless technically IMO

The hardest thing in the world is to put a CD together, you are never totally satisfied with it. Its just a shame we can't all use Pro Tools like most of the shop CDs. But hey it all comes with practice.

Yes people spend quite alot of time doing tracklistings ect.
I think its nice to hear sum1 mix without the use of tools if they have to use tools god help them if they mix live in a club .

Here, here. I remember the days when mix cd's were just that pure uncut live mixing, and they sound so much better

Ive been mixing just under a year now and will be playin out for my debut very soon.

Even somedays in practise ive got it all locked down ;) then other days i'll sound like a punch up in a restaurant kitchen. :P :P

Takes a while to get real good but i've had mates cringe saying they cocked up and I never heard a bliff blaffed beat all night?
8O
Tune selection most important IMO

Yep it is all about the tunes you pick. Plus i think it is easier playing out as you can feed off the atmosphere of the crowd and gauge how things are going.
