Ryanair and bags....

Cabin baggage is a problem now for airlines especially with tight turnarounds. More people now take cabin bag instead of paying to check it in. But it means too many bags for the cabin which causes delays as they need to be tagged in the aircraft

Ryanair are going about it wrong to tackle the problem of delays while making up for the revenue. Instead easyJet have realised why people don't check a bag in is because not all paasengers need 23kg. They have introduced now a way of paying for half the weight for half the price

Pre budget airlines, I'm sure (around) 20kg was free and we dropped it off at the x-in desk, so only carried onboard a small bag of our valuables, and then spent the rest of the flight worrying about which airport it would all end up at! But there wasn't this mad scramble for cabin space, and if people have got the hang of going on holiday with only 10kg + small bag; then the airlines aren't making money out of stuff in the hold....so they might as well go back to allowing 23kg free; or as you allude to, a half-way wieght, say 15kg one-case.

Of course the advantage of 10kg cabin bags is (a) no woeues to check in and (b) you have control of it at all times (ie it won't get lost) so I'd be happy to pay a premium for that. So free hold bags, charge for larger cabin bags. Seems simple enough?

The disadvantage to cabin baggage is liquids and space/weight

Which is why I believe easyJet have made the perfect comprise

Ryanair or easyJet are making in the region of half a billion in revenue from baggage a year. They are not about to let you check in a bag for free

It's a problem they have caused themselves by no longer giving free hold luggage. Yet rather than accept they just keep adding more costs.... Never used to try and avoid Ryanair but I do these days

I played by the rules with Ryanair this year. I got priority on the way out for 6 quid each so that I could get a sharp exit Ibiza side.
There is less fckn about in the cabin with bags I noticed, so it speeds things up for them and everyone else.
But we ended up waiting 20mins for the bus so it wasn't really worth it.
On the way back my suitcase went in the hold. You can take a small bag into the cabin as long as it fits under your seat, it wasn't such a hassle.
I think our total flight costs were 150 from MAN in the middle of summer. Its 50 quid for me to get a black cab 15 miles home from Manchester city centre. I still think Ryanair represents value for money.

agree with diver. the charges aren't hidden.

the likes of BA simply package those costs into higher flight prices.

unless flying with a top end airline or going premium class or above there's not much to choose between ryanair and other airlines

they’re crooks imo. forcing families/lovers to spend extra to sit together is repulsive. the days when you checked a suitcase in and got a free beef stroganoff never seemed so distant. but they control the market so what else can you do?

Book well in advance

People want to pay less and fly at better times

Planes are now a bus service - It is no longer glamorous and certainly no longer fun to fly.
Going through an airport is like check-in for Prison

There are so many pros and cons to the budget airline
