Phew!
Got back from Ibiza at 6.00am this morning.... (Thursday)
So, the verdict? Had an absolutely smashing time! VERY depressed to be back , the place still touches all the right places after five seasons!!
However...I do have mixed feelings about 2003. I'm not about to become one of these cynical, "It's not what it was" twats because the atmosphere and enthusiasm from the people that go is still well and truly intact. You just have to be very careful which nights you choose. There are just far too many clubs on the island to cope with the dramatically decreasing numbers.
I'm not in the least bit worried about this because the island is constantly reinventing itself so tourist numbers will be back up when the next cheese boom arrives. In the mean time, there are more than enough trashy trannies, noisy Italians and mad locals to go round .
...So I'll get the moan out of the way now. 2003 seems to be the year of the empty club - I thought I'd test out the opening night of made in Italy since it sounded like it would be right up my alley (trashy italians are much more my style than Brits in burton/top man garb - can I say that? ). However, this night was a pile of cack . An opening night in mid July in the clubbing capital of the world - half empty??? Yes it's true ! Other nights suffering are island institution - Miss Moneypennies @ El Divino, in bed with Space on Wednesdays, Underground on most nights (nice venue though) and Soul Heaven at Pinup not to mention many more. We were looking forward to a nice fix of Norman Jay to take us to the airport on the last day only to find out that the terrace opening time had changed from 10am....to 2pm....to 6pm....to 10pm!! People just weren't coming apparently . (Monday night at Pinup after DC-10 is rocking however )
The beaches were soooo much quieter too. Staff at Playa Es Cavallet were complaining that July 2003 was feeling more like May. This is good and bad because a fairly quiet Sa Trinxa is soooo much nicer than the Sardine fest that was 2000.
Oh, and another piece of advice – don’t expect DC-10 to be a carry on from Space like last year, it does open early but most people seem to arrive at 4pm for a later close of 9pm 8) .
La Troya, Wednesdays at Amnesia is always a very safe bet, the terrace will always be heaving in the morning from 3am ish and is one of the best experiences to be had on the island. It also seems to be a favourite with the locals….although saying all that, I didn’t make it there this year .
So…after getting excited and spilling vodka coke all over myself on the plane on the way over we headed over to Bora Bora which really seems to be going off this year! Thursdays are wicked as usual, the Salvation crew really manage to bring a bit of sparkle to the afternoons by bringing break dancers and water pistols to liven up the crowds. Very occasionally the music in the evenings is decidedly dodgy (this is nothing new though) but usually it's a very safe bet. Expect to hear Junior Jack's E - Samba and Gus Gus's David being caned to death - which bring the geese out in their droves!! (goose bumps ) Thankfully didn’t hear that P Diddy tune too often.
Had some really good times at BB this year dancing on tables with vodka limon in hand. Word of warning, don’t wear huge sunglasses and engage in this sort of activity when it’s dark because I very nearly fell off the table on a few occasions .
