ROBDER'S REVIEW OF IBIZA 2nd-16th JULY 2003

Phew!
Got back from Ibiza at 6.00am this morning.... (Thursday)
So, the verdict? Had an absolutely smashing time! VERY depressed to be back  , the place still touches all the right places after five seasons!!

However...I do have mixed feelings about 2003. I'm not about to become one of these cynical, "It's not what it was" twats because the atmosphere and enthusiasm from the people that go is still well and truly intact. You just have to be very careful which nights you choose. There are just far too many clubs on the island to cope with the dramatically decreasing numbers.
I'm not in the least bit worried about this because the island is constantly reinventing itself so tourist numbers will be back up when the next cheese boom arrives. In the mean time, there are more than enough trashy trannies, noisy Italians and mad locals to go round :p .

...So I'll get the moan out of the way now. 2003 seems to be the year of the empty club  - I thought I'd test out the opening night of made in Italy since it sounded like it would be right up my alley (trashy italians are much more my style than Brits in burton/top man garb - can I say that? ). However, this night was a pile of cack  . An opening night in mid July in the clubbing capital of the world - half empty??? Yes it's true  ! Other nights suffering are island institution - Miss Moneypennies @ El Divino, in bed with Space on Wednesdays, Underground on most nights (nice venue though) and Soul Heaven at Pinup not to mention many more. We were looking forward to a nice fix of Norman Jay to take us to the airport on the last day only to find out that the terrace opening time had changed from 10am....to 2pm....to 6pm....to 10pm!! People just weren't coming apparently  . (Monday night at Pinup after DC-10 is rocking however ;) )

The beaches were soooo much quieter too. Staff at Playa Es Cavallet were complaining that July 2003 was feeling more like May. This is good and bad because a fairly quiet Sa Trinxa is soooo much nicer than the Sardine fest that was 2000.

Oh, and another piece of advice – don’t expect DC-10 to be a carry on from Space like last year, it does open early but most people seem to arrive at 4pm for a later close of 9pm 8) .
La Troya, Wednesdays at Amnesia is always a very safe bet, the terrace will always be heaving in the morning from 3am ish and is one of the best experiences to be had on the island. It also seems to be a favourite with the locals….although saying all that, I didn’t make it there this year  .

So…after getting excited and spilling vodka coke all over myself on the plane on the way over  we headed over to Bora Bora which really seems to be going off this year! Thursdays are wicked as usual, the Salvation crew really manage to bring a bit of sparkle to the afternoons by bringing break dancers and water pistols to liven up the crowds. Very occasionally the music in the evenings is decidedly dodgy (this is nothing new though) but usually it's a very safe bet. Expect to hear Junior Jack's E - Samba and Gus Gus's David being caned to death - which bring the geese out in their droves!! (goose bumps :D ) Thankfully didn’t hear that P Diddy tune too often.
Had some really good times at BB this year dancing on tables with vodka limon in hand. Word of warning, don’t wear huge sunglasses and engage in this sort of activity when it’s dark because I very nearly fell off the table on a few occasions  .

Pacha was also fantastic 8) (one club that certainly isn't suffering - now there's a surprise), eating in the ‘Fusion restaurant’ there is well worth it but make sure you book in advance. The red snapper is absolutely wonderful. One of the best meals I’ve eaten in my whole life and very affordable too :!: .
Pacha is looking more beautiful than I had ever remembered it. There are loads of candle lit lanterns hanging from the ceiling for the 30th anniversary makeover.
The only draw back on Fridays is the resident. The music Pete Tong plays is absolutely unbearable durge  . Todd Terry, David Morales and Carl Kennedy were all unbelieveable…why follow a line up like that with Pete Tong  ??? He was dreadful. This didn’t matter because it was a cue to head for the funky room which is always very special 8) . The unique atmosphere in this little room will never die and it’s somewhere I know will always satisfy my needs if the island ever loses the plot (God forbid).
It was great to see Aphroditte perform in the main room too! She has to be my favourite entertainer on the island and I haven’t seen her for a few years. She came on in a Pacha gimp mask made of a huge cherry and handed out presents to everyone, aaaah what a nice lady she is :D .

You’ll be pleased to hear that Space is still as great as ever, there were geese (bumps) everywhere (except for when resident Tania Vulkano plays in the afternoon – I’ve seen her kill the atmosphere there twice now, everyone moans and uses their pass outs for bora bora). We also found a rather dubious café which put unmentionables through the till! Can you believe it? Class  ! Cassius was unbelieveable and Steve Lawler upheld his reputation as ever. He finished with that Afrika Bambatta ‘Get up and dance’ thingy again which was very jolly. I’ve seen people on the board saying they didn’t enjoy Cassius….wtf??? Ah well, different strokes for different folks and all that (I purchased a bootleg of the set from bora bora and I wouldn’t say it was dark and hard at all, I would say it was decidedly funky with a good few vocals thrown in). Please don’t ask for details as it’s all very fuzzy!!

DC-10 the next day was messy, dirty and horrid as ever :p , just the way I like it! You’ll notice I’ve included no details of the day here either :p but the photos look like I had a nice time! If anyone goes, can they check the trees to try and spot a couple of white birds we left in there  ? Ta!
After DC-10 is burnout sleep time and all the geese flew south for a while( ;) !)
By the way, top tip, Circoloco volume 2 is out in Ibiza now and it has a free DVD which really shows off the club, well worth getting if you want to look extra special when you get home.

I headed up to Benirras and went on a short yoga retreat in a beautiful centre overlooking the hills (sigh). Met some lovely people and the food was sooooo much better then the half board hotel sh*te they shoveled up for me in figueretas :x . The funniest moment was when I arrived for my first class, put the mat down and heard someone mutter, “Rob?” Lo and behold, it was my yoga pal from Brighton who was also on a retreat here and neither of us knew beforehand  !!
Also went to Cala D’hort to gaze at the lovely Es Vedra over a Sangria and bocadillo 8) . Got a silly mission in our heads and ended up climbing the side of a cliff to get a better view. There’s some nice caves up there but I screamed from start to finish as I have vertigo so I won’t be recommending those sorts of antics  .

Space the following Sunday was absolutely hysterical! One of those terrace moments I will be taking to my grave. The gorgeous, lovely Lottie was on the decks and I love seeing her play because she’s so appreciative when the crowd gives her a response and clearly loves what she does (wearing very sensible sandles similar to something my Gran would wear – v strange, don’t ask why I noticed her shoes, must be the fag in me :p !). She gave me a big kiss after too bless her cottons :D .
Now for the best bit, it was a back to basics promotion and Dave Beer was in a terrible state!! He spent the last few hours before the close in the DJ booth dressed as a woman fanning himself like an Ibiza tranny and gurning for England. He kept getting changed and reappearing in a range of silly outfits and then he started filling his mouth with naughty things and throwing them onto the dance floor much to the horror of the security  . Har har  . Lastly, when Ralf Lawson had finished (big clap for him, he was brilliant) Dave climbed to the top of the DJ booth and stage dived into the crowd!!! Ha ha!! Smiling as I am writing this…THEN….when the terrace had shut, he put two more records on (Salt n Pepa’s push it and another one) despite the fact that a worried Darren Hughes was trying to stop him and security were all over him! Erick Morillo and Lottie were joining in the antics whilst at the same time trying not to engage with the whole thing too much so they wouldn’t get in trouble. They were all acting like really naughty school children and it has to be one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen in my life! Absolute carnage and a reminder of why we’re still doing it :p .
Also v pleased that Space have used a picture of moi in the crowd waving my fan in their review of the night!!
We like Dave Beer now, lots and lots….we like Sundays in Ibiza too…aaah :D !

Another moan though, as per last week, the terrace took absolutely ages to get going. Not because of dodgy music at all but because of sound levels. The authorities have obviously put some restrictions on noise levels coming from Space during the day time   because you could see Darren popping into the DJ booth every five minutes checking the mixer levels and giving all the DJs a hard time (being a promoter can’t be as easy as we all might think). It was sooooo quiet you could easily have a conversation on the dance floor without shouting and the raised bits round the outside and bar area at the entrance virtually had no music whatsoever  . Thankfully, this situation changed at about 6 ish but I hope it’s not a permanent rule because it’s killing the daytime atmosphere & making it more like a bar. People seem to be arriving later than in previous years and it takes ages to get into full swing…But when it does it’s business as usual so don’t worry too much.
So, another wicked holiday and can’t wait to return!! Making plans for September 2004 when I return from my travels around Thailand. Was going to give it a rest for a year but it’s just not possible. The place is incredible 8) ! People seem so miserable since I got back and I keep blubbing every time I hear nice tunes. Want to go baaaaaaack.
Lastly before I forget, what is it with this Base bar thing? Am I missing something? It’s not posh at all and never has been. It’s full of Brits wanting to be seen drinking with A-list DJs and doesn’t have any special atmosphere at all, I even preferred the older one next to the Rock! My advice? Head for the Dome bar about 1/2am (especially on Wedesdays)…it’s much cooler if that’s your bag.
Hellos to Mitch, Lydia, Aaron and Alan from this forum!! Sorry if I’ve forgotten anyone.

Here, here - I've said this for a long time.

Great review, can't wait to be there in what .... 13 days? - then again in September 8)

I'll definately not be doing Space till after 6pm following your comments. Hoping to head off to Defected at El Divino later.

We're also booked into Pacha restaurant, then into club for Subliminal with Erik/Choo Choo.

Bet your really sad to be back, no chance of returning for closing parties?

Aw thanks for the nice welcome but I'd really rather not be here!!
Thinking of ways to return for the Space closing bash so things may not be as horrid as I'm making out....

S'ok I won't take it personally, a trip for Closings always helps I find :p :D

He Robder, interesting and wise words. Selectivity seems to be the name of the game this year.

Gland you had a good time.

Fantastic review Rodber :D

Dave Beer - Legend.

Sounds all good mostly for the clubs i'm interested in. Dont like the low space sound levels much though! Matches what all my mates working on the island are saying - Half empty clubs apart from pacha and Eden. Even Manumisison isnt fillng privilege apparntly

What tunes were big?

Good to here carl kennedy doing well! Top bloke.

I couldn't believe it either. The numbers are significantly different to previous years. I'd say way over 50% less than what I'm used to. It's peak season now for goodness sake!! So what do we think this means for future seasons? People are saying that a more select crowd will arrive with a boom of smaller clubs but I don't agree. Amnesia & Privilege have far too much money and control over what happens on the island....and more to the point, DC-10 was completely empty till late afternoon anyway  .

Had a great time all the same though :p .

I've got a list as long as my arm so if you really want to know I can put something together.
