I got to Space about 2:30pm as people on the guestlist had to be in by 3pm. Mates of mine weren't going in until later, so I was Billy-No-Mates for a couple of hours. Quickly spotted Mick and his mate Dan in the Car Park Arena, which was quickly filling up. (thanks again for the freebie drinks Mick ! And you must say hello to Dan again for me, as I lost him on the Terrace later at night !).
I think two guys called Plastic Funk were playing, who played some pretty obvious stuff, but that was what was needed to get the Arena going. The sax and bongo players were decent, although became a little tiresome when it drowned out almost every record.
Decided to go on a wander with Dan and check out the sunset terrace (only stopping briefly), with someone playing Gabriel Ananda - Doppelwhipper, which goes to show just how wide-ranging the music styles are becoming in the different rooms, dj's seem to be happy to play far more styles in a set, which is great to see.
We then went to the Terrace, which took a while to get going, but by the time Elio Riso came on, it was rocking. Elio played a good set, although I'm still not sure about The Egg Vs Tocadisco ! Doug Villeneuve came on after him and played some quality mash-ups.
We then made our way out to the Car Park where Lawler was playing, and despite the sound being a little poor, I thought his set was superb. We pretty much stayed there until about 1am. Apologies to anyone who got "stickered", it's been a little game of ours for a couple of years now - thankfully any "victims" who realised, took it in good spirits !
Despite being a little concerned about Space's policy regarding guestlist and pass-outs, I thought it worked perfectly, as it meant the club became busier earlier and that it was not a horrendous crush by 11pm. We had plenty of space to dance in the car park, and getting to the bar and toilets was far less of a struggle than last year, so congrats to Space for a very sensible decision.
We had a small gathering at the hotel, and then decided to hit DC10 around 12pm. There was a noticeable Police presence (as at Space), searching everyone, but it didn't seem as "full-on" as some of the other searches I've read about on here. We had pre-paid bands, so were in within 5 mins. There were still a few casualties at this point in the afternoon, but by 2 or 3pm, it had really picked up and the atmosphere was cracking. The security seemed a bit perplexed by the Craig David mask I had, but it provided plenty of photo opportunities, as did the SpongeBobSquarePants t-shirts a couple of the girls had on !
Left about 6pm or so, and (wrongly) decided to get some sleep before the SoS party. Woke up at 8pm feeling decidedly ropey, but we dragged ourselves along to El Ayoun. The door staff were very polite and ushered us in with no problems. Demi, Desyn and Omid were having their usual 3-way-dj-battle, with some great tracks, despite a couple of visits from the management asking to turn the noise down. Omid decided to force a bit of British slang onto the Spanish locals when he explained things over the mic - "We need to turn the volume down, the Old Bill are outside!!!".
We bailed out just before 3am, paying the price for 2 days of sun and Sangria !
Hello as always to everyone I met, there are always too many to mention and I feel like I'd be sure to miss someone out if I tried to name them all, but the company, as always, makes these events what they are.
P.s. - if anyone found my phone in a taxi on Saturday night……….please PM me !
(long shot !)
