RETROXFOX TALKS ABOUT GETTING SIGNED TO PUBLIC RECORDS
Public Records is a new record label set up by leading sample boutique, Loopmasters. Artists upload tracks to the label's drop-box via the Public Records website. Submissions are then shortlisted and voted for by the public. The winning tracks are then offered a contract.
Alan Andersen, aka “Retrofox†is a 30 year old amateur photographer and producer out of Copenhagen who was lucky enough to be one of the first to get signed to the label.
Here's what he has to say about this innovative concept.
What made you decide to submit your track to Public Records?
I haven't really tried much to get my music released before, but I noticed this contest and thought I'd give it a go just for the fun of it. I had this track which a friend of mine thought was cool lying around, so I decided to submit it.
How long have you been making music? Is this the first time you've tried to find label support?
About 16 years ago I discovered electronic music, and 3 years later or so, inspired by the music I was listening to at the time, I decided to start producing myself.I haven't really made much effort to get label support before, but I have previously released two tracks on the small label “Zoolook Recordsâ€
How hard it is getting your music heard?
Everyone can get their music out these days. That makes it pretty hard to stand out, especially if you do it on your own, or if you are releasing your work on a small label without the proper funding for PR. I don't believe it's impossible however, you just have to work hard and get lucky.
Your track made the final cut for Public Records first release ‘Eclectic Beats', has this experience encouraged you on to continue?
I would have continued producing music no matter what, but it has certainly been extra encouraging to be released on Public Records. Also, Public Records has the means to PR the EP, and I'm thinking that it's a good time for me to step up my producing and strike while the iron is hot.
What's next for you?
Well, right now I'm working on promoting myself a bit, as well as working on two new club tracks which I will upload some previews of to my website www.retrofox.dk soon. I guess it's time to send out some demo's as well.
