Renting a scooter in Ibiza

OK, so the island not as hedonistic as I thought. I thought some of the debauchery from the days of the Manumission Motel might be found somewhere, but apparently not. It doesn't mean you can't still have a good time in Ibiza.

I'm interested in renting a scooter to discover the island (note - I'm not getting one just so I can chase the car with the Pacha girls). Do I need a valid driver's license in order to rent one?

:D

Yes, you need a driver's licence to rent scooters
Do you have experience driving scooters, Paris?

Hi Silvia

I figured you needed a license. I'd feel much safer, too, if I knew anything about the road! It looked pretty dangerous on the small roads. I've never driven a scooter in my life.

I would definately not recommend it then Paris. I've been riding large capacity bikes for over 17 years now, and I wouldn't hire a scooter to go around Ibiza! The road surface is very hard and shiny giving little grip for the little wheels of a scooter, and it only takes a bit of sand, dust or a brief downpour and the road surface would be treacherous.

I'm with Paddy in this one. THe pavement isn't the best and scooters to hire usually have small wheels and so more difficult to control. Scooters are not bikes and you can't imagine how difficult is to control properly for the firsts times, you risk to spoil your holidays with a silly accident ;)

Paris, you don't drive? That's soooo New York ;)

If you do, why don't you rent a car? I got one for 24 eur/day last year. That's just 2 drinks at Space!

I was thinking about taking driving lessons but for some reason I always get distracted easily if I'm in a car - I can imagine how bad it would be if I were driving! I'd be looking at the Pacha girls on their way to another beach and drive right off a cliff. I'm okay on a bicycle so I thought a scooter would be easier.

That's a great deal you got for the car - what kind was it and did it have air conditioning? I definitely don't need to drive at all here in NY - it's either the famous subway, buses, the metro north railroad, cabs, car service, limos -- I save a lot of money on gas, parking and insurance (which means more money for cabs in Ibiza) :D

Rent a scooter. I was also timid first time I tried it but it's an absolute gift. The roads are fine.
They make your holiday!

I am now the proud owner of a 150 CC scooter that takes to the highways of NYC like a charm and looks more like a cruiser motorcycle than anything (guess they call it a maxi scooter). I got it to 60 MPH with ease but prefer to keep it a bit slower, 45 max for highways, 35 MPH for city, and I've gotten so good at riding that now taking Ibiza Island by storm on a scooter is fully on the cards for 2008! I've mastered the BQE and the Verazzano Narrows Bridge (never again) so fast riding, wind drag, and crazy drivers with an attitude on an autopista is something I've come to expect. So when I rent a scooter I'm going to need something way more than a 50 cc. Any more recommendations on a place to get a good scooter for the week at a good price? There were loads of scooters parked outside of the Hotel Playa D'en Bossa last year, don't know if they were rentals but they were very nice models. And where to get a good Ibiza road map? Thanks.

No! I have nothing to do with Paris Hilton, the skank. It's the Mylo song, dear, the Mylo song! "Walking with a Ghost" and all that. I'm all debauched out since 2005. Now I want to scooter around and see the sights.
