renting a mobile??

Hi everyone..I need some help and am too tired to read through the site to see if any similar posts to this one I've added....
I need to know if there is such a thing as a rental mobile (cell phone) in Ibiza...
My Canadian mobile company is pretty sh**ty as most Canadian mobile companies are and I have absolutely no roaming coverage in Europe...I'm lucky if I can use my stupid mobile when I travel in Canada or to the U.S.
So what I need to know is 1) is there such a thing as renting a mobile phone in Ibiza and 2) how can I go about doing it?
Every year I go and every single person is able to chat away and keep in touch with whom they've lost, whom they've just met...and me and my friend are stuck with just a hotel phone which charges a gazillion euros a minute.
This year I'll be on my own and will be meeting up with people down there...I have no way to keep in contact and it makes it difficult!!!
Any information or advice will help!!!

Thanks to all.....
Ciao!!

I understand this problem too !!

I think you can buy a pay-as-you-go mobile phone when you arrive on the island.

Will have to search more on that, but am sure ,more people on here know more about this than me !

If you have an unlocked GSM phone than you can just buy a SIM card once you arrive in Spain. It's very simple. You just go to the shop, buy the card and put it in your phone and voila you're ready to go! They are prepaid so you pay for any calls you make, but calls you receive are free. When you run out of minutes you just buy more at a shop.

If you want to buy an onlocked phone you can search the internet. I bought one last year at www.celluloco.com . They had phones from less than $100 to over $1000 depending on what kind of features you wanted. The benefit to these types of phones is that you can use them in almost any country. Just buy the local operator's SIM card and put it in the phone and you're ready to go.....and you're paying the local rate, not some rip-off international roaming charges.

Another option is to drop into the Telefonica (or another carrier's) shop in Spain and you can pick up a prepaid package which includes a phone, a SIM card and some minutes. I've seen these prepaid packages for less than $100. The only downside is that the phone will only be good to you using this particular carrier. You can't, for instance, switch out SIM cards on these phones if you want to spend some time in France or the UK, etc. (unless you have someone hack into them).

yeah you can get prepay phones dirt cheap. sure i seen some models for about 50 to 60 euros with call time included. it'll be one of the first things i do when i arrive in september.

I bought a Pay As You Go Mobile when I was there - cost me about 80 Euros I think, which included about 15 Euros of credit - I got it from the big supermarket half way between Privelage and the Ibiza Town roundabout.

the only thing i want to confirm first is that my sim wont expire if i havent topped it up in between visits to the island, remember vodafone and o2 used to make you do this on prepay? ive been on contract for so long i dunno how these things work anymore

The prepaid card I bought from Telefonica had to be topped up at least once every six months or it would expire. That's not a terrible loss though, because the card itself is very inexpensive. The only real downside is that you lose your number.

I think with UK PAYG phones you just need to make/receive one call/text per year to keep line active. Having never used a PAYG phone though I am happy to be corrected.

Thanks guys!!! I wish my phone was unlocked with a SIM card..but alas, it is not!! These dodgey Canadian phone companies don't have unlocked phones..I have to go to some underground China-town mall to get one...I'll check it out and see if one from here would be cheap...if not I'll go with the other option of looking for one there that's a pay-as-you-go.
I do appreciate all the info!! Now, I have some hope!!! LOL
