Radio One Ibiza 2022?

Anyone heard anything, will this be happening in 2022 do you think?

There were rumours before the pandemic that Radio1 were moving on from the event as younger listeners don't go to Ibiza in as big numbers anymore...but who knows.

I'm sure the Radio1 staff enjoy a jolly to the island so that might swing it!

To be fair it is their demographic isn't it ? ;-)
I used to listen to radio 2 a lot early 2000s but as the music policy changed and the fact I can listen to music I really want to hear with no chat I don’t see the point. Although I leave it on for the dog during the day when I’m at work.

I was listening to Danny Howard's show a few weeks back and someone asked, he didn't exactly act like this was him keeping a big secret, but he did say he 'didn't want to give anything away'. It might mean nothing but that isn't usually the language you'd use if you didn't have an idea.

Unfortunately in the last couple of years pre-pandemic it had scaled down a lot. I think in 2019 they just had a general radio 1 dance anthems show from the Mambo decks on Saturday afternoon, with the old event at Ibiza Rocks on Friday, which is just rubbish compared to the unique event on Mambo rocks. I think they did ANTS on Saturday at Ushuaia with an R1 tint, then they had a 1Xtra day at Ibiza Rocks on Saturday :(

The problem is the political pressure on the BBC - Radio 1 is officially aimed at 15-29 year olds. So the 'Ibiza' demographic is probably 24-29 part of that age bracket which doesn't help .It does feel like they've ebbing away at it's dance output for years - but still the Essential Mix is a highlight, the 'Residency' programming can be pretty forward looking and Pete Tong show is generally decent. I do worry once Pete Tong leaves / stops that a lot of the more credible stuff will go.

We've gone from Seb Fontaine, Judge Jules, Danny Rampling, Pete Tong to competition winners (Danny Howard) and student radio types that have taken up DJ'ing with a focus on dance music, but perhaps that is reflective of society and change on how radio is viewed now.

6Music is a good listen for more alternative stuff and they do throw in a random bit of Techno during the day

Agreed - I went through a good spell of 6Music, their 'rotating' playlist can be a bit annoying and it is a bit pretentious or full of young hip families making falafel or something while listening. Dropped off when Shawn Keaveney went. Mary-Ann Hobbs will always have a dance mix on a Friday and does Techno Tuesday which is good, if you can stand her voice  Blessed Madonna at a weekend is decent as well

Agree on all points. Radio1 thinks it's down with the kids but the average listener age is more in their 30's.

Radio1's Friday night Dance music lineup is strong though moving from the Party Anthems, through to deeper stuff then Techno.

I do think UK radio lacks a serious Dance station, even Radio1's new Dance station is very commercial focused other than that you've only got Kisstory doing garage/r&b/00s dance really.

And yeh Mary Anne Hobbs sounds half asleep :)

The younger demographic they aim themselves at doesn't listen to the radio. Media consumption has changed radically.

Amazed that anyone over the age of 18 would still give a shit about R1 in 2022. It was only ever popular because it emerged at a time when there was nothing else on analogue radio, enjoying a complete monopoly outside London and therefore you had no choice pre-digital. (I loved the pirates but that's another thread) There is no logical reason to remain 'loyal' when the market has diversified so much and you can find whatever you want anywhere on earth at a click. The likes of NTS, Rinse, 1BTN, The Lot, BBC 6... all champion the music of the future & are so far removed from the usual commercial toss. These are the heroes imo keeping things interesting.

That is a real shame. Is it because no one wants or needs to put the time in to get be an established DJ anymore? As long as you have enough followers on social media are you in? And the competitions seem like a quick and easy way in. Or am I just an old fart who doesn’t get it any more? 🤣

As ever, it boils down to why you're in it. All the people I know on NTS and 1BTN are doing it for the right reasons. There's not a lot of money at community-driven stations staffed by volunteers which is why so many are moving to subscription services. A real shame but that's where it's heading. As soon as the big brand advertisers move in then it's game over (see the sad decline of KISS FM.. ). I think what happened with Radio One is they got overtaken by changes in tech and listeners. It made sense to keep the kids when old(er) fckers like me and Johnny Vodka jumped ship to 6 (after they brought in Annie Mac and co) but they didn't realise that the kids are less arsed about music in general now. Worth checking the latest RAJAR stats though - will probably give a better idea of who DOES listen now.

Interesting. It’s hard to believe kids not being into music as much as previous generations have. Quite sad.
