Any of our US contingent ever been to Puerta Vallarta for a break????

If so - what did you think - I want to know if its very different to Cancun and the like.....

I haven't been but I read up about it before our recent trip.

I think it's much like Cancun in that it's basically all focussed on the resort. Perhaps not quite as uber-touristy as Cancun, but you also don't have the Mayan ruins and other neat things to visit nearby.

Cancun was a blast by the way. As long as you make the effort to get out of the hotel zone it's a fascinating place. Our all-inclusive hotel was top notch as well.

I hoped it was more rural, I read some decent books which talked about Puerto Vallarta being the hip place for stars back in the heady days of the 1940's/50's and it came across as unspoilt and still holding on to its olden day glamour - obviously I have got the wrong impression.

Completely put off Cancun through my work colleagues - one set went to an Adults Only resort - just no kids etc (or so they thought).... when they actually got there it was a Swingers Resort and they were stuck there for a fortnight.....

the other couples I have spoken to arent that adventurous and stayed on the complex for 99.9% of the time so maybe I have just picked up on the most negative reviews....:?
