Question for cat owners!!

we're moving Oscar in with us tonight (mrs jjinits beloved cat). We have been in the house since june but we thought we'd wait for the weather to turn before we brought him (doors get left open in summer etc). He stayed with her parents until now. He's lived there all his life and is really happy there, after much deliberation we have decided to bring him.

Anyway, the vet said keep him in for 3 weeks before allowing him out, does this sound right?

and basically im just after some reassurance that he'll be ok? because we feel really cruel putting him through the upheaval, as he is settled where he is, we live on a quieter road but he has a bigger garden where he is now and lot's of nice elevated places to sit as he likes to sit and just watch the world.

are we being cruel? will he bo ok?? will he adapt??

I don't actually have a cat but did hear that what you say is true...

As well as this - when you do get closer to the stage of letting her out apparently putting butter on her paws will help.

God knows why, I think it has something to do with spreading the scent and leading her back to a place she can feel is 'familiar' and 'home'.
 
Yeah, that is the best advice. I have 4 cats now, the last one inherited because the neighbours moved and didnt follow the vets advice and keep him in. It helps them adjust and orientate themselves propperly, if you dont do it the poor thing will be confused and end up wandering back to familiar surroundings.

My other 3 have travelled to 3 houses with me now and each time its taken them about a week of moping and feeling sorry for themselves before the decided they loved it.

Give the lil fella lots of love and treats and he'll be fine. He'll just be happy to be back with mum & dad :P

Another trick is to cut off their whiskers. They will grow back, but its how cats sense direction. The mothers do it to the kittens when they start walking so they dont wander off. Not something I have tried but aparrently works....
 
I've never had any problem with taking cats with me when I've moved. As a kid we even used to take our's camping with us, which was bizarre when I think about it. She used to leg it off into the Welsh countryside or wherever, and then come back at about 7pm for some food and a stroke, then off again. Funniest thing I've ever seen was my then-6-year-old sister when she attached a hastily-binned cat lead to her collar...it was a tornado of cat.

Yeah, when I got my first kitten I thought it'd be cute to get it a lead and take it for a walk. Think I still have some of the scars now :lol:
 
My vet says that cats are much more simple than golden fishes and actually I saw a cat's brain in the cience museum and it's smaller than a cookie 8O

Said that, cats are very "territorial" and they notice lots changes and moving. But the do forget very easy and being a bigger house with bigger garden at the end Oscar will be fine.

My cat Bruna is 3 yo and has lived 3 movings. First one she was too young to notice, the second one was a trauma for me cos we moved to Pep's flat and she spent two days hided behind the washing machine and two weeks crying in front of the door, I think she wasn't very impressed at first sight :lol: :lol:
On the last moving she was perfect, she spent 4 hours exploring the flat and then she curled up in the sunniest corner till today.

Anyway Jjinit, my friend's cat spent 2 weeks inside a cupboard after a moving and another one did something similar. ;)

My sister's cat Lindsay is evil incarnate. I have to take her to get spayed tomorrow and will be dragging sis along to mediate - I don't want to know how much of a tornado she'll be at the doctor's office!
